…and so to the last game of the season. The Knights are seventh and the Reds are fifth. Carnegie are sandwiched between us in sixth place, four points ahead of the Knights. Carnegie hosted second-placed Ealing Trailfinders on Tuesday 17th April at Emerald Headingley Stadium and drew. They end their season on Saturday 28th April again at Headingly against eleventh-placed London Scottish and are highly likely to win on current (and past) form.
BBC (Teletext & online) has the Reds four points above the Knights on 59 points, the RFU and Statbunker has the Reds on 60 points, so I’ll assume 60 points. I’ve attempted to add up the league points from Jersey’s scores and unfortunately I make it 60 points but I hope I’m wrong this time! The Knights have 55 league points and so a bonus point win would leave us seventh because we’d have equal league points but the Reds have won three more games than the Knights over their 21 games played. However we must assume (hope) that the Scottish exiles beat Carnegie and so we would rise to sixth if we beat Jersey.
The Scots exiles have only won six of their 21 games. Carnegie are one league point below the Reds and so the Reds most likely need to beat us to stay fifth. As mentioned, Jersey probably have to win to stay fifth and we can’t drop below seventh if we lose but we want to end the season on a high. Incentives aside, there is pride to play for and the Knights’ indomitable spirit. Their never say die attitude has never been questioned.
Ninth-placed Nottingham have a game in hand and play third-placed Bedford Blues on Tuesday 24th April then twelfth-placed Rotherham Titans on Saturday 28th but tenth-placed Hartpury College must face the mighty Bristol. In all likelihood if the Scottish exiles beat Carnegie, they’ll rise to tenth, so they have an incentive to win. Nottingham can’t catch us even if they have two bonus point wins to end the season.
On their respective journeys, the Reds have recorded 12 wins, one draw and 8 losses scoring 44 fewer points than the Knights (just over 2/game). The Knights have had nine wins, one draw and eleven losses conceding 131 more points (just over 6/game). ‘Defence wins games’ is etched on the Knights’ changing room wall and this seems to be the case; the Knights’ very strong defence early in the season has weakened a little and they now have the ninth strongest defence in the Championship. The Reds have the second strongest defensive record after Bristol and they’ve won three more games than the Knights but haven’t scored as many points.
Reds’ Fly Half Brendan Cope is their highest scorer and fourth highest in the Championship. Cope’s away strike rate is over 81%; Premiership quality! Watch your discipline Knights.
Full Back Tom Pincus is the joint sixth top try-scorer in the Championship with eleven tries to his name. Hooker Nicholas Selway has only scored two fewer and Scrum Half Kieran Hardy has scored eight tries.
It’s about a 65:35 percente split Backs: Forwards in the Reds’ try-scoring with the Wings being the fourth highest try-scoring Wingers in the Championship. Their strong defence has relinquished tries in approximately the same percentage split Backs:Forwards (65:35) but Jersey have scored 17 more tries than they have conceded (the Knights have scored three more). The Reds’ opposition Wingers have scored the fewest tries in the Championship, equal with Bedford Blues and better than Bristol. It’s time to correct that whoever plays on the Wing Knights.
That said tries have still been conceded predominantly down the wings because not many tries have been conceded, it’s all about percentages! Half Backs have scored the next highest number of tries and then Centres. Jersey are the only team together with the Knights that hasn’t conceded a penalty try - yet. Half Back is the only position where the Knights have conceded fewer than the Reds, so perhaps a potential opportunity Michael Heaney, Tom James, Declan Cusack, Simon Humberstone or who plays in those positions.
On a separate note for this last game of the season. Doncaster Knights top the Championship in away attendance. Even the Cornish Pirate’s legendary ‘Press Gang’, their away supporters are below the Knights.

DONNY, DONNY, DONNY…
I would like to get the previews sponsored next season with the money being paid directly into the Doncaster Mini Juniors bank account. I was asked to be the Vice Chairman earlier this year and I would like them to benefit. The previews receive about 75 000 hits per season (figures can be supplied and you can easily verify them).
Please make me an offer (confidentially) , the highest offer gets …Preview sponsored by… (plus website address). As you are probably aware, I also post any press publications about the match under the preview.
There is the possibility or a separate chance to advertise with banners on the fence exactly the same as the ones that face the Knights but facing the Mini Juniors.: Jamiecrawford01@aol.com.
