Loughborough Students preview
Sat 19th Aug, 2017 - 02:30pm
Note: although this is classed as a home game, it is being played at Thornensians Rugby Club. It will allow our newly seeded grass more time to fully sew and embed before the home season starts on 9th September against Rotherham Titans after we travel to Jersey on the 2nd for the season opener.
The Knights will have their first experience of their new home turf two weeks before then when they play Newcastle Falcons on Saturday 26th August @ 2.30.in a game that should be more difficult and better-played by both teams.
“Loughborough Students Rugby Union Football Club is the rugby club that represents Loughborough University in rugby union competition. Of the British universities, Loughborough has unparalleled success, having won the BUCS championship (in its former guises as the BUSA and UAU championship) on twenty-seven occasions. It fields sides in the BUCS league, (inter-university) and in the third tier of the English rugby union system, National League 1. The club has fielded over seventy internationals (male and female), many of whom won caps while playing for the club.” (Wikipedia)
“We provide a fully competitive and varied fixture list in order to maximise the development of our players along with a support team of top class coaches, sport scientists and medics. We have an empowering culture that means players have to develop their ability to take responsibility for their own performance whilst being encouraged to develop their leadership skills as far as they can take them.” (http://www.loughboroughsport.com/au-rugby-mens/about-us)
“…Since first winning the Universities Championship in 1953, Loughborough have won the Universities’ Championship on 28 Occasions, exactly half of the finals played. They also continued to be the highest competing University in the RFU structure, competing at tier 4, a monumental achievement by the club…” (http://www.loughboroughsport.com/au-rugby-mens/history)
Loughborough Students finished eleventh in the division below us last season after winning a third of their games played (10 from 30). They had an extremely strong attack, scoring 905 points over 30 games (over 30/game). If league position relied solely on points scored, the Students would have finished third. Obviously it does not and the Students also leaked 966 points (21.2/match), the fourth worst. Based on last season’s form, the game promises to be a high-scoring and entertaining match. As Loughborough Students Rugby Club is comprised of students, I’d imagine that they are very fit, having a young average age and a few sport scientist students amongst their ranks.
When we had our sabbatical in National One, I thought that they were a professional club that was not only made up of Loughborough University students but it appears that I was wrong. Anyone?
“…Being the first student side to enter the National Leagues and now the first student side in National 1,…” (http://www.loughboroughsport.com/au-rugby-mens/history)
The Students are only one division below us, not three like Guernsey Raiders are plus they have a very strong attack probably with league-leading fitness. The main emphasis will surely be on defence. It promises to be a good defensive test before we face the Falcon’s first XV next week at Castle Park.
