Newcastle Falcons preview
Following last Saturday’s 0-95 demolition of Guernsey Raiders, the Knights will hope to improve on last season’s 34-12 defeat to the Falcons.
The game that will form half of a double header for the Falcons with Nottingham taking to the field immediately after.
The Raiders result has raised questions about the expedience of a result of that magnitude but I agree with John Bale on the Forum, “I’m sure the coaches will have seen plenty (of benefits).
For me the squad can implement training ground moves more easily, cohesion of tge backs, we dont get hammered physically as what happened against Glasgow. The quality of opposition during pre season is increasing.”
It was the first game a new team had played together so starting with small steps seems prudent. The Falcons are in the Premiership which is more than literally a different league. A gulf exists between the Premiership and the Championship primarily due to finances. The Falcons will probably use their full squad at Kingston Park with the use of many substitutions because they have two full games to play. I think the Falcons team that we play at Castle Park will be better.
The Falcons ended last season eighth in the Premiership, recording ten wins and twelve losses. They finished three points below Northampton Saints and three points above Gloucester. They are a better team than the previous season when they only won five games, hopefully the Knights helped in their preparation for last season. Next Saturday Rotherham Titans travel up to Kingston Park to play the Falcons.
The Falcons website has the KO’s as:
v Doncaster Knights (2pm)
v Nottingham (4.30pm)
This double-header will provide all sides with great pre-season competition. The Knights and Nottingham should face a team that is better than they will play in the Championship. The Falcons must face stern competition for 160 minutes. This will severely test their mettle and fitness.
“Summer arrivals include Canada's record try-scorer and Pro 12 winner DTH van der Merwe, three-time French champion Maxime Mermoz and returning fly-half Toby Flood, as Dean Richards' men look to continue their on-field improvements.” (www.newcastlefalcons.co.uk)
Ex-Knight Fred Burden plays for the Falcons after being born in Newcastle, going through the Falcons academy, playing for Cambridge in the Varsity match and ‘graduating’ through several clubs.
