After a closely fought game last time at Castle Park when Munster returned to Ireland as victors 12-28, the Knights travel to Thomond Park in Shannon, Ireland for the second leg. Although 12-28 doesn’t sound like a close game, it was two errors that ‘gifted’ Munster two converted tries from Interceptions against the run of play. The Knights were attacking in the Munster half each time and a third interception from deep in Munster A’s own half almost cost the Knights a further seven points.
Munster were very quick with their defensive line and often cries of “offside” or “behind the back foot” were heard but unfortunately it seemed that Munster were just too quick off the blocks and their defensive line was almost impenetrable. It seems this type of quick defensive line can lead to a greater chance of an interception. Or was this seemingly rapid attack of the Knights line due to the Knights’ line being too flat?
I’m sure that Griff and his crew will have watched the game many times in search for an opening gambit. A kick over the line and chase led to one Knights try maybe that will be seen more at Thomond Park.
Following Munster A’s bonus point win; they are odds-on to get a place in the knockout stages (or the last eight). The Knights are the reverse, we need to beat Munster A and Rotherham Titans both with a bonus point to have any hope of going through. The situation in Pool 2 is complicated as London Welsh have been disqualified from the competition.
Pool 2 Table
Munster A played 3, won 3, 15 points
Titans played 3, won 1, lost 2, 4 points
Knights played 2, won 0, lost 2, 0 points
London Irish in Pool 3 are still the only other unbeaten team in the Cup.
There are no other games in Pool 2 as London Welsh have been disqualified, we play the Titans at Castle Park next week in the Cup.
