We resume league action with our second away game in a row following the postponement of the home tie v Munster A after the very untimely passing away of Mr Munster rugby, Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley.
(For those too young, Eddie Murphy plays Axel Foley in Beverley Hills Cop (1984))
The Knights are third after four wins and two losses, the Welsh are seventh with two wins and four losses.
The Knights have scored two more tries than the Welsh over the six games played; both have conceded 14 tries. Wing/Full Back Kristian Phillips is Welshes top try-scorer, just one try-scored behind Tyson Lewis, the Knights’ top try-scorer. Fly Half Joe Carlisle is Welshes top points scorer and equal sixth in the Championship. Dougie Flockhart and Declan Cusack have shared the kicking duties for the Knights and scored nearly the same number of points, added together they would be second. With a strike rate of 71% Carlisle betters Dougie and Declan’s identical 67%.
As from this month (October) the Welsh have a new backs coach is Sonny Parker. “As a player, Sonny Parker has been there, seen it and done it, but now he’s revelling in his new role as backs coach at London Welsh.
Parker won 31 caps for Wales, winning a Grand Slam in 2008, and playing in two World Cups, in 2003 and 2007, as scoring 29 tries in 157 appearances for the Ospreys over eight very successful seasons…
…“A lot of the drills I do with the guys are based around being able to pass, kick or being able to beat someone one-on-one, because as a back you should be able to do all of those things…
…With high flying Doncaster Knights next up for the Exiles on October 29 when the Championship reconvenes, it’s an important opportunity for Welsh to build some winning momentum to take back into the league.
“This two-week B&I Cup block was really important to us to get that winning attitude back after the London Irish game,” said Parker.”” (Welsh website)
We can probably expect a greater emphasis on backs interplay and the quote demonstrates how other teams view playing the Knights this season as opposed to last. We are seen as “high flying” this season but not last so teams up their game!
