Round six of the Championship season sees Nottingham in equal ninth (Amended =8) position after losing 7-29 to London Irish last Friday. The Knights are still fourth after their ‘bad day at the office’ in Ealing, going down 27-14 to the then ninth-placed Ealing Trailfinders. Ealing now lie in equal-seventh place. Nottingham have taken Ealing’s place in ninth position (with the Titans).
Nottingham’s season opener was against the current second-placed Carnegie; Nottingham lost at Headingly by just two points 26-24. Next up the Cornish Pirates beat Nottingham 19-35 at Lady Bay then Nottingham had to take the flight to Jersey to play the Reds where they won 21-22. Last time out Nottingham lost to the unbeaten London Irish 7-29.
Fortunately for Knights after their disappointing result is that we are still fourth after the Cornish Pirates and Jersey Reds both lost to different Exiles. The Pirates gained a losing bonus point when they lost 25-24 against London Scottish. The Reds also came away with a losing bonus point after losing 23-18 to London Welsh.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Rotherham Titans lost 21-37 to Carnegie. Carnegie’s winning bonus point puts them nine points above us, whilst Welsh’s win over the Reds puts them fifth, just one point below the Knights.
Nottingham’s defeat to the Irish exiles started with 15 unanswered points in time for oranges. The Irish went on to score another 14 points but then an 84th-minute try by Nottingham Hooker TJ Harris meant that Nottingham weren’t nilled by the Irish. This try was converted by Fly Half/Centre Lawrence Rainer.
Stabunker haven’t included the Nottingham v London Irish result so those stats aren’t included. On one side of the coin we know that Irish are top and not Carnegie plus Nottingham didn’t score a league point and so remain where they were; on the other side of the coin we haven’t got up-to-date Nottingham stats but they only scored seven points!
Elsewhere across this Nation we call England on Saturday (unless indicated) whose result could affect the Knights league placing:
Two points above: Cornish Pirates (3) v Carnegie (2) at The Mennaye on Sunday
One point below: London Welsh (5) v London Irish (1) at the Madjeski Stadium
Two (& three) points below: Jersey Reds (6) v London Scottish (=7) (Amended =8) at St. Peter’s in Jersey
Three points below: Ealing Trailfinders (=7) (Amended 7) v Richmond (12) at Richmond FC on Sunday
Four points below: Rotherham Titans (=9) (Amended =8) v Bedford Blues (11) at Goldington Road on Friday
Nottingham (=9) (Amended =8) are at Castle Park
Richmond are now the only team yet to win a game. They could give us some breathing room if they get their first win against seventh-placed Trailfinders. The Irish and Carnegie are within three points of each other and the Irish exiles are more than one win away from third-placed Pirates. Richmond will have played Trailfinders two season’s ago when both teams were in National One. The Trailfinders came up last season and Richmond came up this season.
COYK Let’s get that winning feeling back
