Rosslyn Park RFC rather than Old Deer Park.
All other details remain the same: Saturday 23rd April, Kick Off 15:00.
The last game of Stage One of the Green King IPA Championship see the Knights travel to the Capital to face their first opponents this season, the Welsh exiles. The first game saw the Welsh narrowly beat the Knights 33 – 35 in a game that showed some great play with a few lapses of concentration and focus that led to the loss. It’s now time to get even and avenge that two-point defeat by trouncing the Welsh (or at least comfortably beating them). Although the Knights are confirmed to finish second, the Welsh in sixth are four league points below Jersey and just two league points above Nottingham. The Welsh are playing for league position, potentially between fifth and seventh but the Knights are playing for pride. The Knights must try to prevent the Welsh from being the only team to do the double over them in the Championship this season.(? I believe)
Last Saturday the Welsh visited The Mennaye in Cornwall to face the Pirates in a game that saw sixth-placed London Welsh travel to play eighth-placed Cornish Pirates with six league points or two places between them. After a 38-38 draw, their league positions remain unaltered.
The Knights win against fourth-placed Bedford Blues secured a historic second place finish for the Club and sets up a play-off semi-final showdown with Leeds Carnegie. The Blue’s bonus point plus Jersey’s loss at Ealing Trailfinders (30-24) confirms their fourth-placed Promotion Play-off spot.
We now know that the play off fixture dates has been decided.

At the other end of the table, the Trailfinders win against Jersey plus bottom-placed Moseley’s 24-22 loss against top-placed Bristol means that Moseley are relegated as they are seven points below the Trailfinders with a possible five points up for grabs. Moseley are swapping places with Richmond from National One because they are above Hartpury College by thirteen points with just ten points available from the two remaining games. Last Saturday’s home defeat to Richmond 29-33 scuppered Hartpury College’s chances of promotion
The relegated team from the Premiership has yet to be decided between London Irish and Newcastle Falcons. The Falcons sit six points above the Irish with two games to play.
On to the upcoming game:
The Knights are second with fifteen wins, two draws and four losses from their 21 games played. The Welsh are sixth, recording ten wins, one draw and ten losses. The Knights have scored 579 points (27.6/game) to Welsh’s 418 points (19.9/game). The Knights have conceded 453 points (21.6/game) and the Welsh have conceded 509 points (24.2/game).
The Welsh Wings, Back Row then Centres have been their most prolific try-scoring positions, followed by the Second Row then the Front Row. The Welsh exiles have conceded four more tries than they’ve scored, predominantly by the Wings but a few by the Centres and the Half Backs. London Welsh have scored a few more tries at home compared to away and nearly 60% of them have been scored in the first half, so the Knights don’t want to get caught napping again. Understandably fewer tries have been conceded at home and just over half of these have been in the second half.
A player that you may have heard of, ex-England International Olly Barclay is the Welsh Fly Half.
You also may remember Bevon’s cousin, Welsh’s Centre Guy Armitage consistently breaking our defensive line at Castle Park. Unsurprisingly Armitage is Welsh’s leading try-scorer.
Elsewhere in England on this final league game of the season, all on Saturday 23rd April:
Nottingham (7) v Cornish Pirates (8) @ the Lady Bay Sports Ground
Bedford Blues (4) v Bristol Rugby (1) @ Goldington Road, Bedford
Ealing Trailfinders (11) v Rotherham Titans (10) @ Ealing RFC - Club Ground
Jersey (5) v Leeds Carnegie (3) @ St Peter’s to play Jersey
Moseley (12) v London Scottish (9) @ Billesley Common
The Pirates would leapfrog Nottingham with a win. The top four league positions have already been decided, as have the bottom three. Only positions five through nine have yet to be confirmed.
London Welsh’s confidence will be sky-high as the current British & Irish Cup holders, it’s up to the Knights to shatter their confidence and force them to leave the field with their metaphorical dragon’s tail between their legs.
