I’m back but its early days in the B & I Cup, so not much to report!
Unfortunately the link on Statbunker for the stats from the two games played doesn’t work so please bear with me.
After one game when the Knights drew 22 – 22 in Jersey, we find ourselves equal second in Pool 5. (Newport) Gwent Dragons are top and Connacht are bottom after the Dragons beat Connacht 10 – 34 in Galway, Ireland.
The Twitter feed read that the Knights started very well at St Peters but Jersey, no doubt aided by a massive, vocal home support ran in 17 unanswered points in the second half. After scoring three tries in the first half and the Knights going into the changing rooms 5 – 22 up, I got excited about a five-point victory but Jersey came out for the second half on a mission. Normally the Knights fare better in the second half but not last Saturday!
The Dragons’ result gave them a five-point victory, so a perfect start for them.
Statbunker list Georgian Saba Meunargia (described as a “a monstrous tighthead prop”) as Connacht’s try-scorer. Conor McKeon (Fly Half) scored the penalty kick and Aiden Moyniahan (Fly Half) scored the conversion. A prop as the leading try-scorer, amazing! The Knights had better watch out for strong scrimmaging.
Out of interest the early leaders of the other Pool are:
Pool 1 – Moseley (5 points)
Pool 2 – Bedford Blues (5 points)
Pool 3 – Leeds Carnegie (5 points, London Scottish are second on points difference)
Pool 4 – Cornish Pirates (4 points)
Nottingham also drew with the Cardiff Blues in Pool 4.
