The Knights face a rejuvenated Ealing Trailfinders who will be on a high after their 28-17 win against the Cornish Pirates. They lost their opening three matches:
24-23 against Rotherham Titans (who beat us 30-23 last Saturday)
17-37 against third-placed London Scottish
14-28 against top-placed Leeds Carnegie
Until last Saturday Ealing, who have just come up from National One, hadn’t won a game but they have been very unfortunate with their first three fixtures when you look at their results. Some thought that the Pirates would be a stern test but that test was passed with distinction.
The Titans scored 30 against us and won by seven points, Trailfinders fared better after conceding 24 points and only losing by a point. Their next two opponents were against teams that could end the season in the top four promotion play-offs.
It looks like Ealing Trailfinders won’t be the Championship whipping boys as their first three losses might have indicated from a team just up from National One. The only direct comparisons are the Knights have are their equivalent performances against the Titans at Clifton Lane. That said it’s not a fair comparison as it was the first game of the season for all teams.
Ealing have only scored one try fewer than the Knights and a third of these have been by the back row, another third were by the wingers. Danger peeling off scrums and set piece or passing out to the wings.
Conversely the Trailfinders have conceded a try more than the Knights, over half of these have been in the first half. They have conceded the fewest in the last 20, which indicates good fitness.
At least we won a losing bonus point against Rotherham titans. We are the only team in the Championship to have won a losing bonus point from both of our losses. Nottingham and the Pirates have also won two losing bonus points but they’ve lost three games.
I’m glad to report that we’re still within one game of the top spot but the Cornish Pirates, Ealing Trailfinders, Moseley and Jersey are more than one game below us.
Elsewhere on Saturday:
The Welsh (3) must travel across London to play the Scottish (4)
Bedford Blues (7) host Nottingham (8)
Moseley (11) welcome Jersey (12) to Bristol
On Sunday:
Bristol (2) host Rotherham Titans (5)
Cornish Pirates (9) travel to Yorkshire to play Carnegie (1)
Dougie Flockhart is still the top scorer and Latu Makaafi is still the top try scorer in the Championship.
‘Sorry’ I can’t be at the game as I’m going to Tickenham to watch England v Australia.
