We start our second home game of the season in third place against Jersey, who are tenth with the same record of one win and one loss but Jersey haven’t scored any bonus points and the Knights have scored three. The points’ scored/conceded difference is 19 in the Knights’ favour. Jersey lost their first two games to Carnegie 39 - 22 and the Cornish Pirates 17 - 19.
Similarly both teams won eight of their twenty two games played last season but Jersey drew two, the Knights drew one plus Jersey scored twelve bonus points to the Knights’ nine. This resulted in Jersey finishing two places or five points above the Knights.
Sorry but I can’t look at the Jersey website as every time I try to open it Malwarebytes blocks a harmful intrusion attempt and it won’t open!
There were two Jersey players listed in the Championship Dream Team at the end of last season but I can’t check if they have left on the Jersey website!
“…1. Sam Lockwood (Jersey RFC)
An aggressive defender and destructive ball-carrier whose scrummaging has come on leaps and bounds in this his first full season in the Channel Islands. Played 20 games and scored four tries after an early season injury setback…
3. Harry Williams (Jersey RFC)
The 23-year-old has earned a two-year deal with Exeter after a superb first full season in the Championship. To quote Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter, Williams is ‘a big, strong guy who scrummages really well.” Like his front row partner Lockwood, Williams had an injury disrupted start to the season but was the cornerstone of the Jersey pack from Christmas onwards…”
BBC Sport have said that Harry Williams has now been signed by Exeter Chiefs
To date Bedford Blues and Leeds Carnegie are the only teams in the Championship to have won both opening games. Ealing Trailfinders and Nottingham are the only two teams to have lost both opening games but Nottingham have already scored three league bonus points (one try and two by finishing seven points or less).
The Knights lead the table amongst the teams that have won one and lost one courtesy of their three bonus points scored (two try and one losing). Proof, if it was needed, that bonus points can make a big difference in league position. Long may this continue. In this case bonus points account for the difference between third and tenth.
Elsewhere in Round 3 this weekend:
Leeds Carnegie v Ealing Trailfinders
Moseley v London Welsh
London Scottish v Bedford Blues
Cornish Pirates v Rotherham Titans
Bristol Rugby v Nottingham Rugby
