The Knights first away game of the 2015/16 season is away at Nottingham’s Lady Bay ground. Last week the Knights put on an impressive display against London Welsh and, although we lost, we earned two bonus points. Gaining try bonus points was something that was lacking last season and although we finished a few games with a narrow loss, most of these left players, coaches and supporters with a feeling of dismay. Saturday’s narrow loss to London Welsh left everyone feeling encouraged at a job well done.
Dougie Lockhart’s strike rate was 71.43%, 3rd equal highest points scorer in the Championship and only two points less than the top. A reminder that Dougie was the top points scorer in the Championship last season by a clear 30 points.
In their turn Nottingham also gained a losing bonus point by finishing within seven points of the Cornish Pirates, losing 18 – 14. Ex-Knight Dan Montagu was the new captain for Nottingham in Penzance.
In Nottingham’s loss to the Pirates, the sin bin was ‘blamed’ for the loss. They lost all 18 points whilst down to 14 players during two sin bins, one in each half.
Andy Bristow posted on the Forum that he saw Rotherham Titans host Ealing Trailfinders and in his opinion either the Welsh or the Knights would have beaten them. An encouraging sign and a great start to the season although it’s early days yet and teams will inevitably improve as they ‘find their feet’.
The opening fixtures contained some surprising results;
Bristol, last season’s runners up for promotion and only lost one game before the play-offs were beaten by Bedford Blues (finished tenth last season)
Rotherham Titans only beat newcomers Ealing Trailfinders by a kick
Leeds Carnegie beat Jersey
Cornish Pirates beat Nottingham (last season’s eighth beat fifth)
Elsewhere on Saturday 12th September:
Jersey v Cornish Pirates
Ealing Trailfinders v London Scottish
Bedford Blues v Moseley
Then Sunday 13th:
Rotherham Titans v Leeds Carnegie
London Welsh v Bristol Rugby
C’mon Knights
DONNY, DONNY, DONNY…
