With the lack of anything to talk about on the Forum I’ll raise the question about pre-season games.
There are arguments both for and against opposition in the Premiership v opposition in leagues below us regarding greater risk of injury v enough of a challenge etc, etc.
Everyone has their own opinion;
Is tougher opposition better to prepare the Knights for the season ahead in the hope that it will be slightly easier in the Championship; or should tough opposition be avoided as there is a greater chance of multiple injuries as tackles are harder to make and receive?
OR
Is ‘easier’ opposition better to enable the knights to hopefully enable strategies and game plans to be formed and to get to know each other’s style of play without having to ‘chase your tail’ and always being on the back foot?
After all decisions are made about the level of opposition, should pre-season games be played at Castle Park or away?
We can formulate our opinions about the level of opposition and the location but then the practical nature of getting teams to play at Castle Park is another matter.
I think that these pre-season games are great being mainly home games and theoretically increasing the challenge by a step up in league position in each game. There’s not much that can be worse than starting a season with injured players. That could start the Championship campaign adversely and demoralise players from the start.
The increasingly better opposition in terms of league position should enable the new-look Knights to get to know each other without the increased risk of injury plus the players will learn to step-up their performance each week so that stepping-up their performance to play London Welsh should be a natural progression.
What is your opinion and why?
