Yes we are second-bottom in the Championship and our points scored is the second lowest but fourth-placed Nottingham have only scored 14 points more over 14 games yet they are fourth. You’d think it’s because their defence is so tight but Nottingham have conceded 17 more points than us, which goes to demonstrate that it’s not how many points are scored/conceded, it’s when they are. Similarly Nottingham have scored four bonus points, we have scored five! We’ve had a few close losses and Nottingham have had a few close wins. ‘That’s football’ (or rugby)
Looking solely at points difference; firstly only Worcester, Bristol & London Scottish have a positive points difference. Of the also ran’s only Jersey, Roth Titans andLeeds Leeds Carnegie have a better points difference than us. That puts us seventh on points difference.
Bonus points won: after the top three only Jersey,Leeds Leeds Carnegie, Bedford Blues and the Cornish Pirates have scored more. That places us eighth on bonus points won.
We are sixth best in the number of tries conceded.
We have the leading points scorer, with the best overall strike rate in the whole Championship by nearly 20 points and over 3% in Dougie Flockhart.
Last but not least we are fourth in the strength of the sixteenth man, with Knights’ home and away attendance being the fourth highest.
Not the stats of a team that could face relegation, so we’re not going down. The turnaround began when we did the double over Carnegie, so let’s shove a pie (or pasty) in the face of the Pirates and then become the second team to beat Bristol before Worcester have the opportunity to try.
Don’t forget that Albion must win two more games than we win over these eight games to finish above us and the three teams above us have all won four games, the same as us. If our close losses had been close wins or draws, who knows?
DONNY, DONNY, DONNY…
