Round 6, Doncaster Knights v Cambridge
Saturday 30th November, Castle Park, KO 2.30pm.
Cambridge Rugby Club (the Blood & Sand) currently lie in tenth place, on equal points as the Knights in ninth. The Cornish Pirates and Caldy are eleventh and twelfth respectively. Both the Knights and Caldy have won two and lost three games, the Knights are above by a points difference of 42. Whichever team wins on Saturday will determine which team is above the other in the table.
For their last league game on 19th October the Blood & Sand welcomed the Cornish Pirates for a clash that saw then adjacent teams in the Championship battle for tenth place, one place below the Knights. Cambridge won 29-22, Bridge tries were scored by centre Sam Hanks, centre Matt Hema, hooker Archie Vanes and prop Seb Brownhill. Fly half Louis Grimoldby converted three of them plus scored a penalty. (Corrected 11.45 25/11)
The Knights travelled to Goldington Road to play in-form, third-placed Bedford Blues. The Knights wanted to back up their fantastic away win at Ealing Trailfinders with another in Bedford to again rejuvenate their disappointing home form against London Scottish. Unfortunately, that was not to be and the Knights returned the 34-18 losers. Blues’ winger Dean Adamson became the highest try-scorer ever in the Championship (awaiting official confirmation) after he scored two of their five tries. Adamson has scored 105 tries in the Championship, overtaking stalwart, Mark Bright in the overall standings (again awaiting official confirmation).
The Knights’ back row Morgan Strong came away with a brace of tries of his own.
Last week saw a marked improvement in performance for the Knights in the Championship Cup at Caldy. Hopefully that improved performance and enhanced self-confidence is sustainable plus injuries don’t rear their ugly heads to enable the Knights to rise in the Championship league table.
Thus far in the Championship, the Knights have scored just five more points than Cambridge and conceded 37 fewer. The Knights are listed as having scored the second fewest tries in the division after Caldy, with Cambridge having scored one more. However, the Knights have conceded five fewer tries than the Blood & Sand. Cambridge fly half Louis Grimoldby is the tenth highest points scorer in the Championship.
On 15th October Cambridge RFC announced that they, with Chinnor RFC are participating in the Not The Premiership Cup. In response to being excluded from this season’s Premiership Cup the two exiled clubs will play for a trophy between themselves. The first game will take place under lights at Chinnor RFC on Friday 18th November, two weeks before the resumption of Championship fixtures. Chinor were the 33-24 winners. It was a ‘free’ weekend for Premiership Cup matches, so many neutral supporters were expected and it was a bumper crowd with much support given to the clubs not invited to play in the Premiership Cup. The lack of Premiership Cup games has given Bridge the opportunity to train and practice moves/set pieces, it has also given any injured players some time to recover. Conversely has the lack of game-time dampened their sharpness?
All games being played across the Albion (not Plymouth…):
All on Saturday 30th November
Ampthill (8) v Coventry (1)
Cornish Pirates (11) v Chinnor (6)
Doncaster Knights (9) v Cambridge (10)
Ealing Trailfinders (2) v London Scottish (7)
Hartpury RFC (4) v Caldy (12)
Nottingham (5) v Bedford Blues (3)
A Knight W would see us rise three places to sixth if Chinnor, London Scottish and Ampthill all lose. Sixth place is obviously the upper half of the table, where we’d like to be as a minimum.
A Knight L would see us drop to eleventh if the Pirates win.
