Newcastle Falcons in Premiership Cup preview
sponsored by Twenty Four IT Services (www.twentyfourit.co.uk)
Sunday 10th November, Kingston Park, KO 3pm.
The game is played on Remembrance Sunday, lest we forget the fallen heroes from the wars. We also remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth and the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.
It kinda puts a game of rugby into perspective!
Newcastle Falcons opened their Premiership Rugby Cup campaign last Saturday by taking all five points at Caldy, winning 12-33. They top Pool A with a points difference of 15 better than Sale Sharks after just one game.
Try scorers for the Falcons were: England centre Oli Spencer, scrum half Hugh O’Sullivan, back five Freddie Lockwood, wing Nathan Greenwood and wing Adam Radwan. Four tries were converted by fly half Brett Connon.
The visitors led 19-0 at the interval and got the scoring underway after just four minutes when Oli Spencer scored in the left corner.
That was quickly followed by Hugh O’Sullivan after a line-break down the right and quick hands to work the ball back infield, with Brett Connon adding the conversion.
They secured a 19-point advantage with the final play of the half, Freddie Lockwood marking his 50th appearance with a try when he hit a hard line from a lineout down the right and ran over the top of the last man, Connon converted.
Newcastle’s dominance continued into the second half when Adam Radwan freed Nathan Greenwood for a converted try down the left.
Radwan turned scorer shortly after when he collected an offload from Jack Metcalf for a converted try down the right – Metcalf showing a neat outside break to create the opportunity.
Diamond said the game was competitive but there was a little bit of difference in size and speed with the Falcons being fully professional and playing in the Premiership. He added that they would field a strong team at home to Doncaster next weekend, and a lot of the guys who were rested for Caldy will come back in.
The Knights fell short 37-43, to Sale Sharks in a close Premiership Cup battle at Castle Park. Despite losing, the Knights played some brilliant rugby and showed their true potential with some well-worked tries. This performance will have warned Newcastle boss Steve Diamond to expect a difficult encounter at Kingston Park on Sunday.
Knight try-scorers were full back Jordan Olowofela’s brace, new loan player Tom Currie and utility back Telusa Veainu
Russell Bennett scored three penalties.
The two league points scored by the Knights for finishing within seven points of the winner and scoring four tries places us third in the Pool, above Caldy.
