Sale Sharks in Premiership Cup preview
sponsored by Twenty Four IT Services (www.twentyfourit.co.uk)
Friday 1st November, Castle Park, KO 7.30pm.
Premiership Cup action returns for the second season after a weekend without action.
Hopefully Semesa Rokoduguni, Cory Teague, Logovi’i Mulipola, Adam Hopkinson, Conor Davidson and George Wacokecoke.have recovered from their injuries.
The Premiership Rugby Cup is an English rugby union knockout cup competition for teams in Premiership Rugby and from the 2023/24 season the RFU Championship. It was created in 2018 to replace the Anglo-Welsh Cup after the withdrawal of the Welsh regions. The matches were typically held over either the Autumn international, Rugby World Cup or Six Nations Championship weekends to allow club’s International players to be available for league action. The three pool winners and the best runner-up are entered into the semi-finals with home advantage given to the team with the better record in the pool stage and the final would be held at the home of the highest ranked club. This season the Knights are in Pool A with Sale Sharks, Newcastle Falcons and Caldy. Currently in the Premiership Sale are sixth and Newcastle are ninth; in the Championship, the Knights are ninth and Caldy are twelfth.
Sale Sharks beat Harlequins in the 2019/20 season final. Gloucester beat Leicester in last season’s final.
The Sharks are the two-time European Rugby Challenge Cup winners, their danger men this season are wing Tom Roebuck and Sale and England hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie. They are both the Premiership’s equal fourth highest try-scorers after scoring four tries over five games, wing Arron Reed and England and Sale flanker Ben Curry are also prolific try-scorers. Scotland and Sale scrum half Gus Warr (ex-Knight loanee) has recorded the most kicks in the Premiership with 71. Warr is very familiar with Castle Park and Knights’ supporters although from when they supported him as a Knight. The Knights need to be ready for Warr to kick from behind a set play. Fly half, former South African international Rob Du Preez is the eighth top points scorer in the Premiership.
In the Premiership a brace of tries each from Arron Reed and Tom Roebuck gave Sale Sharks the easy win over Newcastle Falcons 43-10, earlier this month, an example of these two plentiful try-scorers touching down twice a couple of weeks ago. Last Saturday against Bath
I know this is in the Premiership league not Cup but it gives an indication of strengths or weaknesses.
Our next two matches are in the Premiership Cup, next week away at Kingston Park in Newcastle against the Falcons, then away again at Paton Field, Merseyside against Caldy.
ADDED: Caldy play Newcastle in Merseyside on Saturday 2nd.
