Round 4, Doncaster Knights v London Scottish
Saturday 12th October, Castle Park, KO 2.30pm.
After just three games, the Knights have scored seventeen more points than Scottish but conceded two more.
So far this season the Scottish exiles lost 19-45 to the early Championship leaders Coventry, 34-33 to Hartpury and beat the Cornish Pirates 26-15. That one win and two losses leaves Scottish mid-table in seventh. The Knights are two places above in fifth after two wins and one loss.
New Prop Ntinga Mpiko and wing Noah Ferdinand were try-scorers against Cov. Back row Alex Wardell, centre Hayden Hyde (Dual Registered [DR] with Harlequins), centre Ben Waghorn (D/R with Harlequins), prop Will Hobson (D/R with Harlequins) and scrum half Lucas Friday (D/R with Harlequins) touched down against Hartpury. Four Scottish tries v Hartpury were scored by Harlequin players.
Last time out Scottish beat the Cornish Pirates 26-15 at theirTwickenham Stoop (sorry Richmond Athletic Ground [RAG]. Harlequins play at the Stoop) home the evening before the knights played in London, gaining the bonus point win. Exile try-scorers were lock George Hammond (DR with Harlequins), back row Bailey Ransom, scrum half Lucas Friday (D/R with Harlequins) and centre Sam Riley (D/R with Harlequins) . Ex-Knight Elec Lloyd-Seed converted three of them.
Three of their four tries were scored by Harlequin players. Seven tries from 11 scored in their first three games were by DR Harlequin players, how many Harlequins will we face?
Scrum half Lucas Friday (D/R with Harlequins) has scored in each of their three opening games played.
The Knights learned lessons from their home defeat against Nottingham to overcome the current division Champions 35-36 in their own back yard. This hard-fought win was nail-biting to the X followers as the game went one way, then the other. The Knights held on their single point advantage for over ten minutes at the end of the game. Trailfinders deserved their two league points for scoring four tries and finishing within seven points, especially when the Knights gained the maximum five points for winning and scoring four tries. What a fantastic result, it was just a shame that not enough supporters were willing to make the trip on a coach.
After a quarter of Championship league games have been played, these are all games being played across England:
Friday 11th October
Hartpury (8) v Cambridge (11)
Nottingham (4) v Ealing Trailfinders (3)
Saturday 12th October
Ampthill (10) v Caldy (12)
Cornish Pirates (9) v Bedford Blues (6)
Doncaster Knights (5) v London Scottish (7)
Coventry (1) v Chinnor (2)
At this early stage a win or loss could leave us anywhere between second and tenth.
The Scottish exiles results this season indicate a vastly superior team than in previous seasons and the Knights have struggled to beat them at Castle Park 29 – 24 last season and 15-14 in 2022.
We need to be the 15th player for the Knights on Saturday and hope the lessons learned against Nottingham, carried forward against Ealing haven’t been forgotten.
Many Doncasterians aren’t aware that they are actually Scottish! Doncaster was ceded to Scotland by King Stephen during the 12th Century in the Treaty of Durham and never formally returned to England. Is it Doncaster Scottish v London Scottish?
