On 30th August Nottingham travelled to Mattioli Woods Stadium, Welford Road to play Leicester Tigers and lost 38-17. Winger David Williams started and finished Nottingham’s first try after he chipped over the top in midfield that he gathered himself. Full back Jack Stapley and No. 8 James Cherry ran down the left and then worked the ball back to Williams in the 22 and he outpaced the Leicester defence. Williams scored again in the right hand corner after the ball was shipped out wide. Lastly hooker Jack Dickinson piled over in the last play of the game.
On 3rd September Nottingham welcomed Ampthill to the Bay for a second pre-season friendly. The game was played under the Friday night lights at Nottingham’s The Bay, Nottingham won a close game 27-21. It was a game of contrasting styles with The Archers looking to play expansive rugby whereas Ampthill preferred to repeatedly drive into contact. The Mob were reduced to 13 men late in the game but The Archers left it with less than five minutes to go before making their numerical advantage count by scoring after they stole a lineout on their own 22 and passed the ball to each side before dotting down under the posts.
Jordan Olowofela’s hat-trick facilitated the Knights’ 45-31 first game win over Ampthill, he was subsequently awarded player of the match.
Nottingham had a very tough opening to their Championship campaign as they welcomed last season’s runners-up, Cornish Pirates to The Bay. They gained a losing bonus point after narrowly losing 18-24. The Archers spent 10 of the opening 12 minutes with 14 players following a yellow card for taking a player out in the air. The Pirates exploited this advantage and scored two tries; one was converted. The Archers took their turn exploiting a player advantage when the Pirates received a yellow card. The Archer’s hooker Harry Clayton’s try was converted by Matt Arden plus a penalty scored left the score at 10-12 within 30 minutes. Finally, with the clock in the red, the ball eventually reached No. 8 Jay Ecclesfield for his maiden try.
Oddly enough given Jordan’s player of the match for the Knights, Sponsors’ Player of the Match was Ryan Olowofela for Nottingham. Ryan is Jordan’s identical twin brother.
