Doncaster Knights v Bury St. Edmunds
Doncaster Knights v Bury St. Edmunds, pre-season, Friday 23rd August, KO 7:30pm Castle Park.
Doncaster Knights begin their 2024/25 season campaign with a home fixture against Bury St. Edmunds. Bury Rugby are known as the Wolfpack and unveiled a new crest in July to mark their centenary. The wolf holds deep significance in Suffolk, especially in Bury St Edmunds, where legend tells of a wolf guarding St Edmund’s head after his martyrdom.

This first fixture will allow Head Coach or Knights Director of Rugby (DoR) Joe Ford, to trial all new signings and current squad members with the procedures and give him an early indication for the season ahead on how the team interacts. Joe, and his team, supported by Sir Ian McGeechan can start off the season as they mean to progress. Previous DoR, Steve Boden (Bodes) left during the season which left Joe Ford to step up and take over. Bodes is now an Assistant Coach at Coventry Rugby Club.
Bury St Edmunds play in National 2 League East, the fourth tier of English Rugby. Pre-season or not, they will be keen to take a scalp from a team two divisions higher but the Knights regard this as testing out squad members, fitness, systems and combinations.
The Wolfpack finished sixth in National 2 East, winning 14, drawing 1 and losing 11 of their 26 games played. They scored more points and conceded fewer than second-placed Barnes but as we know, it’s all about when you score or concede the points! Each set of players know each other after the Knights’ training camp down at Bury, so no doubt they’ll be some scores to settle/points to prove after any banter between the players.
The training camp was on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th August at Bury St. Edmunds, primarily aimed at both fitness and team bonding. This excursion included a trip to ‘The Playground’, which looked like an intensive Army assault course. Details of this can be read on the DRFC website.
On Friday the 16th of August, the Knights travelled across to Sale Sharks’ training centre in Carrington for a joint training session with the Premiership team. This was a prime opportunity to assess how the team performs physically, with their ball handling, tackling and game play. This should provide a great start to the season; primarily a physical and team-building exercise at Bury then a skill-based rugby session with the Sharks, a Premiership team. Next up we welcome Bury for our pre-season game.
Jacob Ford, Head Coach at Bury St. Edmund’s is Knights DoR Joe Ford’s brother, their father Mike is ex-England Defence Coach and their brother George is one of England’s choices at fly half. Mike is currently Head coach of the Belgian national rugby union team.
The Wolfpack have added new pups to enhance their strength:
New pups:
Jack Johnson, fly half from the British Army. Jack has previously played for the club.
Gabe Jones, utility back from Brunel University plus involved in the EalingTrailfinders Programme. Ex-England and GB 7s training squads as well as Scotland U20s.
Euan Rees, utility back from Shelford Rugby Club. In Regional 1 South East League.
Dan Donavan, back row from Australia and played playing in Italy’s second tier.
Ewan Guy, back row from Cardiff Met University BUCS Super Rugby outfit
Ben Sams, back row from Brunel University.
Jones is the key signing based on experience.
