Round 22, Saturday 25th May, KO 2.30pm
The last game of the season sees Hartpury welcome Doncaster Knights to their ALPAS Arena. The Knights hosted Hartpury on 21st October 2023 and just won a very close match 20-18. Both teams scored two tries but the Knights converted both of theirs plus Sam Olver scored a penalty and a 30th minute drop goal. Hartpury’s fly half Harry Bazalgette converted one of their tries plus scored two penalties, his other conversion attempt was very close. Hartpury’s tries were scored by flanker Sam Lewis (can also play lock, Dual Registered [DR] with Bristol Bears) and scrum half Oscar Lennon (DR with Bristol Bears).
Hartpury also have very close links with Gloucester Rugby (as well as Bristol), Gloucester’s training pitch is next to Hartpury’s pitch and Hartpury Ladies are named Gloucester-Hartpury Women RFC.
The Rugby Paper stated that five Gloucester players are DR with Hartpury.
Last time out Hartpury scored six tries in the 44-36 win against Ampthill, this emphasises their reputation of being an attacking side. Pury has scored the third highest number of points in the Championship, illustrated by their fly half Harry Bazalgette being the equal second highest points-scorer with Ealing Trailfinder’s Craig Willis.
Try-scorers against Ampthill were full back Alex Morgan (can also play wing), who scored a brace, propeither Jon or Toti Benz-Salomon (twins, both DR with Bristol), flanker Harry Short, outside centre Sam Smith (can also play wing) and substitute hooker Ethan Hunt.
The Knights’ ‘game of the season’ win against Trailfinders saw two outstanding tries by scrum half Ollie Fox and centre Joe Margetts and very solid defence. The defence held Trailfinders to scoring just 12 points, the first time that has happened in any competition this season.
Team spirit at Castle Park has always been a strength and this proved to be decisive against Ealing because going into such an important clash, the team had lost consecutive league games, conceding 81 points.
Championship games taking place on May 25th:
Saturday 25th May
Cambridge (11) v Ampthill (7)
Ealing Trailfinders (1) v Bedford Blues (4)
Hartpury University (6) v Doncaster Knights (5)
London Scottish (9) v Cornish Pirates (3)
Nottingham (8) v Caldy (10)
It was Coventry’s (3) turn to welcome Jersey Reds
Ampthill aim to beat bottom-placed Cambridge and hope we do them a favour by beating Hartpury for them to finish sixth.
Whatever the result, Trailfinders finish top and The Blues finish fourth.
A Knight W will see us end the season in fifth place.
A Knight L will see us end the season in sixth Place.
The Pirates can overtake Cov into second if they beat the Scottish exiles.
If Caldy win and the Pirates win, Caldy will finish ninth, a place higher.
Fifth or sixth place finish is in the Knights’ own hands, the Knights faithful are now hoping the season will end on another high note with an away victory in Gloucestershire.
Looking forward to next season, twelve players have re-signed, five new signings have been/are due to be announced this week, five from the academy have accepted contracts for the 2024-2025 season.
Reportedly head coach, Joe Ford, will be signing or will have recruited up to 20 new players, several, it’s believed have Premiership experience.
