Cornish Pirates preview

Round 16, Doncaster Knights welcome the Cornish Pirates to Castle Park on 23rd March, KO 2.30pm.
Doncaster knights in fourth place entertain old rivals, second-placed Cornish Pirates hoping to complete a double over them following a brilliant away win in Penzance early in the season (Round 6). All Championship teams have had a week off competitive league action so hopefully the injury count will be fewer. The Pirates have only been beaten two other times this season and only one of those was at Mennaye Field. It was by 2 points, 18-20 to Bedford Blues on the second game of the season. Their other loss was away to who else but Ealing Trailfinders! The Pirates play Ealing in Cornwall on 5th April.
Last time out the Pirates hosted Ampthill at Mennaye Field and won 33-14, the try count was 5-2. Pirate tries were scored by flying centre/winger Matt McNab playing winger, who scored a hattrick, full back Will Trewin and substitute hooker Rhys Williams.
Fairly typically the pitch was heavy after a week of rain in the South West. The Pirates went down 0-7 after just 3 minutes but came back with 5 tries of their own. Initially McNab won two footraces against the Ampthill full back, Trewin broke the line, McNab ran the length of the pitch and the 5th Pirate try was scored in the final minute.
BBC Sport spoke to Pirate coach Gavin Cattle about the win: www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/68515263.amp
The Knights travelled to Richmond Athletic Ground to play the unknown quantity London Scottish; who knows how many Harlequins players they will field or in which positions? They returned with the full 5 points, winning 20-34. Knight tries were scored by substitute hooker George Roberts, winger Malik Holden, substitute scrum half Ollie Fox and a penalty try was awarded.
Championship games taking place this weekend.
All Saturday 23rd March
Bedford Blues (5) v Caldy (9)
Cambridge RFC (10) v Nottingham (8)
Doncaster Knights (4) v Cornish Pirates (2)
Ealing Trailfinders (1) v London Scottish (11)
Hartpury University (6) v Coventry (3)
Ampthill (7) were due to play Jersey Reds
Nottingham welcomed the Scottish exiles to their The Bay home on Friday 15th March and just won 31-28. It leaves Cambridge and Scottish 10th and 11th, level on league points.
That means that Cov, the Knights, Hartpury, Nottingham and Cambridge have played 14 games.
Trailfinders, Pirates, Blues, Ampthill, Caldy and Scottish have played 13 games.
A Knight W would rise them a place to 3rd if Hartpury beat Cov. We would need a win with a try bonus point to overtake the Pirates to possibly go 2nd to be certain otherwise we’d be on equal league points and both won 10 games; it would then go down to number of tries then points scored!
A Knight L would see us drop to 5th or 6th if either or both the Blues beat Caldy and/or Hartpury beat Cov.
