Bedford Blues preview

Round 10, Castle Park, Saturday 20th January, KO 2.30pm
Doncaster Knights in fourth welcome fifth-placed Bedford Blues to Castle Park for their second consecutive home game. Unfortunately, last time was also the Knights’ 2nd consecutive surprise defeat to a team a few places below them in the league.
The Knights lost 24-32 to an Ampthill side that adeptly seized the opportunities handed to them by the Knights.
The Blues last played on New Years Day when they lost 19-34 to the now 2nd-placed Coventry. The try count was 3-4 but Will Maisey unusually only converted 1 and no penalty kicks were scored. Cov’s fly half Patrick Pellegrini converted all 4 of their tries plus added 2 penalty kicks, to add 14 points from the boot. Pellegrini also dotted the ball down to increase his personal points tally to 19. I don’t wish to rub the loss to Cov in but if the Blues had won, they’d have risen to first place in the Championship.
The Blues have had 3 three successive league victories on the road and the Knights aim to halt this away purple patch. Previous encounters between the teams have been fairly even but the Knights certainly have the advantage at Castle Park and aim to keep this success going.
The Blues have scored the third highest number of points in the Championship and also conceded the third fewest. The Knights have scored 13 points fewer and conceded 40 more points.
Remarkably as every stat is third; they have scored the third highest number of tries and conceded the third fewest! The Knights have scored 8 fewer tries and conceded 1 more.
Blues' fly half William Maisey is the fifth highest points-scorer with their centre Sean French in 7th. Maisey is normally number 1 and his kicking prowess is legendary. Yet again the Knights must keep their discipline.
French is a points-scoring machine this season as he is also the Championships leading try-scorer. No other Blue is in the top 15 try-scorers.
All of these stats are after the Knights have played an extra game than the Blues.
Championship games taking place this weekend:
All Saturday 21st October
Ampthill (6) v Ealing Trailfinders (1)
Caldy (9) v Hartpury University (8)
Cornish Pirates (3) v Nottingham (7)
Doncaster Knights (4) v Bedford Blues (5)
London Scottish (11) v Coventry (2)
A Knight W could see them go 2nd if the Scottish exiles beat Coventry and Nottingham beat the Pirates.
A Knight L could see them go 7th if Ampthill overcome Trailfinders and the Pirates lose to Nottingham.
Cambridge have played 9 games and miss this Saturday.
Cov, the Knights, Ampthill, Nottingham and Hartpury have played 8 games.
