To replace Round 7 Jersey Reds, Friday 15th December, KO 7.30pm
Edinburgh Rugby have kindly stepped in place of the departed Jersey Reds to allow the Knights to have a meaningful home fixture. Especially relevant because Christmas is getting closer and it’s under the Friday (K)night lights. Edinburgh Rugby is one of the two professional rugby union teams from Scotland together with its oldest rival Glasgow Warriors. Edinburgh play most of their home games at Edinburgh Rugby Stadium.
The club competes in the United Rugby Championship (URC). The URC is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. There are currently 16 teams in the URC, they have each played 7 games with Leinster in first place and Edinburgh Rugby are fifth.
Mike Blair is their Head Coach and either Jamie Richie or Grant Glichrist are Captains.
I counted 48 professional players in their squad plus 2 Academy players are part of the squad but have yet to pl\ay. Even though Edinburgh are due to play Castres Olympique the day after they play us, it is not a URC league match and they have plenty of professional players keen to show what they can achieve.
Last Saturday Edinburgh beat Ulster 24-27 and the Knights beat the Cornish Pirates at their Mennaye Field 28-39, which is a rare occasion. It was a great display and Bodes (Doncaster DoR Steve Boden) said that the players eager to conquer the Pirates in their own back yard. Both teams are on a high and want that to continue so that they can play their last league game on a winning streak. Edinburgh play their neighbours and oldest rival Glasgow Warriors on Friday 22nd December and the Knights travel to the Wirral to play Caldy the day after.
Championship games taking place this weekend:
All Saturday 16th December
Ampthill (5) v Caldy (9)
Bedford Blues (6) v Nottingham (3)
Cambridge (11) v Coventry (7)
Ealing Trailfinders (1) v Cornish Pirates (4)
Hartpury RFC (8) v London Scottish (10)
We are 2nd, only 3rd-placed Nottingham could overtake us if they beat Bedford. The Pirates, in 4th, are 8 points behind. However, we will have a game in hand over Nottingham after Saturday.
After Caldy v Bedford Blues was cancelled last Saturday, teams have played a different number of games. 5 teams have played 6 games, 4 teams have played 5 games and the Blues and Caldy have played 4 games.
It’s Friday (K)night lights as both the Knights and Edinburgh players charge out to demonstrate their prowess. An exciting, probably free-flowing game of rugby is expected which should raise the try-scoring count for each team. Edinburgh Rugby’s logo is a castle and the Knights play at Castle Park. Let combat begin.
