Championship Round 2, Saturday 28th October, Grantchester Road, Cambridge KO 3pm
Although the Knights beat Cambridge 38-11 in the first Cup match, they won’t expect this Saturday’s game to be any easier, most likely more difficult. Cambridge have experienced Championship and even Premiership teams for the first time in their first few games and so have almost had experience overload! They even almost won their first Championship game.
The results of their first few Championship Cup games were:
Doncaster Knights 38-11 Cambridge
Northampton Saints 55-5 Cambridge
Cambridge 17-64 Cornish Pirates
Cambridge 17- 52 Ealing Trailfinders
Bristol Bears 98-14 Cambridge
Cambridge managed to score 2 converted tries against Bristol Bears Premiership team last time in the Cup against their best players, apart from the players on International duty in France. Bristol were preparing for the start of the Premiership season and so didn’t play future Bears. In that game back row Mathew Dawson scored Cambridge’s first try then it was the Steffan James (fly half) show when he converted that try, scored another and converted his own. You can’t compare the Knights’ 82-12 loss to the Saints to Cambridge’s 55-5 because the Saints fielded very different teams: initially giving experience to the more recent recruits v Cambridge and then preparing for the Premiership season v the Knights.
The Blood & Sand’s first Championship league game was at Dillingham Park, Ampthill when they were only beaten by 2 points (28-26). The score was 7-7 at half time and Ampthill won the game by a try scored in the last play of the game. Cambridge were so close to winning their first ever Championship league game.
Although a 26 point scoreline may not readily indicate it, Cambridge scored a try-bonus point after scoring 4 tries as well as the losing bonus point by finishing with 7 points of the winner. Blood & Sand tries were scored by scrum half Kieran Duffin, hooker Ben Brownlie scored a brace and substitute hooker Morgan Veness. 3 of the 4 tries scored by Cambridge were by a hooker. All 4 tries were scored by a player darting from behind rolling mauls, so the Knights must be wary of this.
The Knights were triumphant in their first Championship game against Hartpury University RFC by 2 points, 20-18. Both teams scored 10 points apiece in the second half after the Knights led 10-8 at the break. Knight scrum half Ollie Fox scored our first try and wing George Simpson scored the second. Both sides scored 2 tries, Knight fly half Sam Olver converted them both but bisecting the uprights eluded Hartpury’s Bazalgette on one of their conversions. Olver scored a penalty to Bazalgette’s brace but the decisive, game winning score came from a fantastic drop goal scored by Olver.
