RGC 1404 V Doncaster Knights

The Knights’ only pre-season friendly fixture of the ‘23/’24 campaign has them travelling to North Wales to play RGC 1404. Next up are the Premiership Rugby Cup matches that will allow players to demonstrate their ability in a competitive match that isn’t the Championship league.
RGC 1404 were formerly known as "Gogledd Cymru"; they are a rugby union team founded in 2008 and call Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay, Conwy home. Hence their nickname of the Gogs.
1404 is a nod to the date that rebel prince Owain was officially crowned Prince of Wales and founded his Welsh parliament.
They attract players from across North and Mid Wales, from as far afield as Newtown and Llanfair Caereinon. Their ultimate aim is for a senior RGC player to make it all the way to the Wales international team, following in the footsteps of rugby players like Dewi Bebb, Robin McBryde and George North. Prior to North Wales’s regional teams, a player had to play in South Wales in order to improve and better his chances (it was before Ladies played rugby).
RGC 1404 currently play in the Welsh Premier Division, of which Cardiff RFC are the current Champions but Neath have won the division the most times (7). (wikipedia)
RGC finished mid-table (7th), similar to the Knights in the English Championship.
This will mark a return to old stomping grounds for Knights players George Roberts and Billy McBryde who both previously played for the Welsh side.
On 12th August RGC 1404 welcomed Sale to Colwyn Bay and won 35-7. Prop Elis Evan was first to cross the whitewash. Back row Charlie Probert then touched down after a strong push forward the pack. Jordon Liney was next on the scoreboard, again after the driving maul did its work. Wing Sam Earl-Jones converted all three tries. A brace of tries from scrum-half Daf Williams pulled the Gogs away with Sam Earl-Jones and Tom Jarman conversions ending the game with a 35-17 win. (Extremely difficult to find positions!) It seems that one of Sale’s tries was scored by a loaned RGC player.
Head Coach Ceri Jones saw plenty of positives with the young players impressing. Many players were given their debuts and there was much home grown talent on display.
The game will be the first time that the Knights have played against another team competitively since they’ve been training together. It will demonstrate player’s strengths, weaknesses and teamwork - how they gel with the other players.
