Ealing Trailfinders preview
sponsored by Twenty Four IT Services (www.twentyfourit.co.uk)
The last match of the Championship season is round 22 on Saturday 22nd April, Doncaster Knights v Ealing Trailfinders, Castle Park, KO 2.30pm. The teams face each other again next week (sixth of May) in Ealing in the Semi-final of the Championship Cup. The winner will play the winner of the Cornish Pirates v Jersey Reds, played on the Friday evening before.
The Championship has new teams at the top and the bottom of the table after last Saturday. Jersey Reds are now two points above second-placed Trailfinders at the top and Richmond are one point below London Scottish at the bottom. The Reds have one hand on the Championship Trophy and only need to match Trailfinders’ result when the Reds play Ampthill to lift the Cup with both hands. Similarly, London Scottish must only match Richmond’s result to avoid relegation. Richmond will know what result is needed because the Scottish exiles play Nottingham at Lady Bay on Friday evening. They will only play for pride against the Pirates if Scottish beat Nottingham.
After Jersey Reds beat Trailfinders 19-13 last Saturday to rise above them in the Championship table, Trailfinders will be eager to end the season with a win and hope that Ampthill beat Jersey as outlined above.
The Knights want a bonus-point win and hope that Richmond beat the Pirates. Both hopes are desperate but never say never…
The Knights are the resounding underdogs for this encounter but remember last season in November 2021 when they beat Trailfinders 22-5 at Castle Park and will aim to emulate the achievement once again.
Although Jersey are now above Ealing, Ealing have scored 116 more points and conceded 31 fewer. These scoring stats leave Trailfinders with four more bonus points scored. Of these points Ealing have scored 13 more tries and conceded 2 fewer than Jersey.
Trailfinder Fly Half Craig Willis is the second highest points-scorer in the Championship, with 15 Championship tries to his name Flanker Carlo Tizzano is the equal top try-scorer, Winger Jonah Holmes equal-eighth after scoring ten tries.
Championship games this weekend:
Friday 28th April
Nottingham (9) v London Scottish (11)
Saturday 29th April
Doncaster Knights (6) v Ealing Trailfinders (2)
Bedford Blues (4) v Coventry (2)
Hartpury University (8) v Caldy (10)
Jersey Reds (1) v Ampthill (7)
Richmond (12) v Cornish Pirates (5)
A Knight bonus-point W would take us fifth if the Pirates lost against Richmond.
The Knights would finish the season sixth if they drew or lost.
Whether the Knights finish fifth or sixth this season will depend on beating Ealing with a winning try bonus point and Richmond beating the Pirates.
