Round 22, Saturday 22nd April, Caldy v Doncaster Knights, Paton Field, Thurstaston, Merseyside. KO 3pm.
Tenth-placed Caldy have won seven and lost thirteen of their twenty games played, the Knights have won nine and lost eleven. Caldy have scored 432 points and conceded 648, the Knights have scored 513 (+81) and conceded 541 (-107). Of these points, Caldy have scored 61 tries and conceded 86, the Knights have scored 67 (+6) and conceded 69 (-17). The key take-away from these stats is that although Caldy are four places below, we have only won two more games or scored eight more league points than them this season.
Caldy and Scotland Centre Elliott Gourlay is the equal-seventh highest points-scorer in the Championship. Winger Nick Royle is the equal-fifth highest try-scorer and Hooker Oliver Hearn is the equal-seventh. These player’s achievements stand above the team’s league position.
The Knights’ highest try-scorers George Simpson and Maliq Holden are equal-eleventh.
Last time out Caldy received the Ealing Trailfinder’s lesson in how to play rugby and were soundly beaten 73-14. The Caldy players that did breach Trailfinder’s defence were Winger Michael Cartmill and Flanker Reuben Birch.
The Knights had an agonising finish to their game against Cornish Pirates to lose 13-14.
Apparently, the supporters coach is full for the trip to Caldy, plus the supporters that make their own way there so Knights’ supporters must make themselves heard.
Saturday, 22 April
Jersey Reds (2) v Ealing Trailfinders (1)
Cornish Pirates (5) v Hartpury University (7)
Ampthill (8) v Bedford Blues (4)
Caldy (10) v Doncaster Knights (6)
Coventry (3) v Nottingham (10)
London Scottish (12) v Richmond (11)
A fixture list that could see new headers and footers to the league table as second welcomes first and twelfth host eleventh. If the Reds beat Trailfinders, the Championship will have a new league leader for the first time this season. We could also have a new bottom-placed team if the Scottish exiles beat Richmond with a try bonus point.
Remember that there’s only one league game to go after Saturday, so the division Champion and the team relegated is between these four teams. The Knights might have a hand in deciding the Champion because they play Trailfinders next week. The Reds welcome Ampthill.
According to the league table a Knight W with a try bonus point could only take them on the same number of league points if Hartpury beat the Pirates but still below on the number of games won.
A Knight L could see the Knights drop to seventh if Hartpury beat the Pirates or Ampthill beat the Blues, or eighth if both teams win.
A Draw would not be sufficient to prevent being overtaken if Hartpury and/or Ampthill win.
