Round 17, Amphill Rugby v Doncaster Knights, Dillingham Park, Ampthill, Bedford KO 3pm.
Round 16 for the Knights and three other teams.
The Knights are sixth in the Championship with a game in hand over eight other teams including Hartpury RFC, who are four points above the Knights. The Cornish Pirates are one point below but have also played an extra game.
Ampthill are tenth, also with a game in hand over most other teams. They could leapfrog the two teams above them who have both played in extra game if they won and both Caldy and Nottingham lost to put them eighth, so much to play for.
Ampthill away supporters came home in a jubilant mood last Saturday when Ampthill beat Caldy 16-17 after the previous three fixtures between the teams this season had gone the way of the home side. The Knights fixture at home to Jersey Reds was called off.
Ampthill have scored just 39 points fewer than the Knights over 15 games (2.6/game) and conceded just 34 more points (2.3/game). Of these points the Knights have both scored three more and conceded three fewer tries than Ampthill, so very similar points-scoring stats plus both teams have scored six try-bonus points, although Ampthill have won an extra losing-bonus point.
Ampthill Winger Ben Cambriani is the Championship’s equal fourth top try-scorer even after playing a game less than three quarters of the division.
Other Ampthill players to be wary of are Hooker Syd Blackmore, who has been in fine form scoring six tries in five games and leading scorer in all games No.8 Morgan Strong.
Championship fixtures on the 18th:
*Coventry (3) v Caldy (8)
*Jersey Reds (2) v Hartpury RFC (5)
Nottingham (9) v Ealing Trailfinders (1)
*Ampthill (10) v *Doncaster Knights (6)
London Scottish (12) v Cornish Pirates (7)
* have a game in hand
The Knights would need a bonus point W to be certain of overtaking Hartpury RFC if they lost to the Reds. Although I believe a four-point win would do because, although both teams will have won an equal number of games, Hartpury will have played an extra game, the Knights will probably have scored more tries (currently scored three more) and very likely have the best points difference (currently 41 in favour of the Knights). Am I correct?
A Knight L could see them drop to seventh if the Pirates beat the Scottish exiles, although the Pirates have played an extra game.
