Championship Cup Pool B Round 2, Bedford Blues v Doncaster Knights, Goldington Road, Bedford Saturday 18th February, KO 3pm
At February’s Supporter’s Eve, Bodes (Doncaster Director of Rugby Steve Boden) said that the Knights currently had 14 players injured but he is hopeful that they will return gradually over the coming weeks so that the Knights can hopefully play the last few games with an uninjured side. Knight Winger Jack Spittle returned last Saturday but unfortunately had to be substituted after an injury. Jack probably won’t be available against the Blues, he possibly returned from injury too quickly.
The Knights will charge to Bedford in buoyant mood after their 10-try, 66-12 victory over London Scottish last Saturday.
The Blues lost 33-24 away against Coventry. Bedford were 26-5 down at the break and so won the second half 7-19, unfortunately they leaked too many first half points, the Blues were 14-0 down after 20 mins courtesy of a brace of Suva Ma’asi tries (Cov’s Hooker).
Pool B is still topped by the Knights with Coventry four points below in second. They are the only teams that could progress to the knockout stages, so the Knights must beat the Blues to guarantee to progress further (unless London Scottish beat Coventry on Friday).
The Knights are the fifth highest-scoring team in the Championship Cup and the Blues are seventh after scoring 27 points fewer. Defensively the Knights are fourth and the Blues are seventh after conceding 33 more points.
The Knights have scored two more and conceded the same number of tries as the Blues. Bedford Scrum Half Jake Garside and the Knights Scrum Half Alex Dolly are tied in second place with four others as the top points-scorer.
Ex-Irish age group International and Blues’ Centre Seán French and Garside are tied with three other players at the top of Pool B after scoring three tries. Knights Wingers Maliq Holden and Jack Spittle are equal-second with ten others after each player scored a brace last Saturday.
The Knights know that if they beat the Blues, they will definitely progress in the Championship Cup, a loss would require Cov to lose or draw. The Cup format is different this season with no quarter-finals, so its straight to the semi-finals then the final. Only the best-ranked second-placed team will progress with the Pool winners.
