Round 14, London Scottish v Doncaster Knights, Richmond Athletic Ground (RAG)
Saturday 21st January, KO 3 pm.
This week the Knights travel to London to play Richmond at their Richmond Athletic Ground (RAG).
Last Saturday was a game that Bodes (Knights DoR Steve Boden), his coaching team and the Knights would rather forget. Losing 10-25 in their first home game of 2023 to Hartpury RFC, especially after losing their first game of this year 37-15 to the Cornish Pirates the week before. They were both games that the Knights could have won but that didn’t happen. Richmond lost 27-7 to Caldy last week, leaking three converted tries and two penalties in the process. Richmond’s try was scored by Flanker Toby Saysell (National 1 player of the season 2020.) Richmond were promoted back to the Championship for the 2020/21 season.
The Knights are sixth after both winning and losing six games. Mond are tenth after winning three, losing eight and drawing one of theirs. The Knights have scored 308 points after 12 games and Mond have scored 251. The Knights have conceded 293 points to Mond’s 390. That leaves a points scored difference of 154 or nearly 13/game in the Knights’ favour. The Knights have scored 44 tries, seven more than Monds’ 37, therefore 62 points of the points difference between the teams are from the boot. Mond are seventh on the tries scored list yet tenth in the Championship. The RAG is obviously a fortress because tenth-placed Richmond have conceded the second fewest points at home in the Championship. With five points, the Knights have scored one more try-bonus point than Mond. Ealing Trailfinders have conceded 21 more points at home than Mond.
Fly Half Bill Johnston is Mond’s highest points -scorer and ageless Captain, 44 year old No.8 Mark Bright is comfortably their leading try-scorer and the Championship’s equal fifth highest. Inside Centre Paul Kiernan is next.
All Championship are games are taking place on Saturday 21st January:
Ampthill (11, game in hand) v Coventry (3)
Hartpury RFC (5) v Ealing Trailfinders (1)
Bedford Blues (4) v Cornish Pirates (7)
Jersey Reds (2) v London Scottish (12)
Richmond (10) v Doncaster Knights (6)
Nottingham (8, game in hand) v Caldy (9)
A Knight ‘W’ will see us rise back to fifth if Hartpury lose but a Knight ‘L’ will see us drop to seventh if the Pirates beat Bedford.
