Championship Cup Round 2, Old Deer Park Sports Ground 11th November, KO 7.45 pm
London Scottish RFC
on 10 April 1878, London Scottish FC was founded in The Queen's Head, in Water Lane, Blackfriars, London (universally known as MacKay's Tavern, frequently mis-recorded, as Ned Mackay the jovial Scottish landlord ran the pub).
London Scottish was the first of the "Exiles" rugby clubs to be founded, and the last of the main three – after London Irish and London Welsh – to go professional (or semi-) in 1996.
Scottish turned fully professional in 1996 when Tony Tiarks bought the club for £500,000.
In the 1998–99 season, Scottish made their only appearance in the English Premiership. Despite finishing 12th out of 14 teams and therefore not liable for automatic relegation, they fell into administration at the end of the season. This was essentially because owner Tiarks became disillusioned and bailed out in Summer 1999.
Scottish restarted and were relegated nine divisions by the RFU.
They are now a member of both the Rugby Football Union and the Scottish Rugby Union and have Bryan Redpath as their Director of Rugby.
The partnership with Harlequins is a great opportunity to build a lasting and competitive playing pathway for London Scottish players alongside Quins players.
Last couple of head to head league performances
26/12/21 London Scottish v Doncaster 19-39
25/09/21 Doncaster v London Scottish 36-7
Last time out
On the fourth of November in Round One, the Scottish exiles beat Bedford Blues 26-17.
Try-scorers in the win against the Blues were Back Row William Trenholm after breaking a tackle, Winger Noah Ferdinand after a wide pass from Fly Half Harry Sheppard. Finally Scrum Half Daniel Nutton dotted down after a gap opened following a multiphase attack. All three tries were scored in the first half. Man of the Match Hooker Sam Riley gave London Scottish the bonus point after the break.
Sheppard converted three of the four tries.
Scottish danger men
Man of the Match Sam Riley, who peeled off from behind a scrum to score.
Back Row Trenholm, Winger Noah Ferdinand, Hooker Daniel Nutton.
Team strengths and weaknesses
Scottish have scored more points at home in the league than Hartpury, Caldy and even second-placed Jersey Reds. The Reds beat the Knights in Jersey and the Reds have scored the most points away in the Championship. Eighth-placed Richmond have conceded more points away from home than Scottish have. Scottish have scored one more try-bonus point than the Cornish Pirates.
Despite these scoring achievements, Scottish remain at the foot of the table without a win in the league but they are renewed in the Cup.
Friday’s game
Both teams are tied at the top of Pool B in the Championship after both recorded a bonus-point win last Saturday. The Knights are above Scottish by virtue of having a point’s difference of six higher, so just the six points separate the teams. Despite this Scottish scored four more points than the Knights but conceded ten more.
The other Pool B Championship Cup game
Bedford Blues welcome Coventry on the same day and at the same time.
On 2nd November the Knights announced the signing of Lock Theo Vukasinovic from Wasps.
