Coventry rugby
Has a proud history full of talent before rugby union became a professional sport. They also have a recent glimmer of financial gain from the permitted concerts, so their future looks bright.
Last time out
It was a tough day at the office for Doncaster Knights as slow phases and handling errors thwarted their attempts to come out on top of Coventry in the first leg of the Championship Cup quarter finals. Jordan Poole was first to score at Castle Park last Saturday. Ten minutes later back row Fred Betteridge spotted a gap and went on one of his renowned storming runs to score. Cov centre Andy Forsyth later alluded a few tackles to score just before half time. Betteridge dotted down his second try after short phases followed a driving maul after the break.
The Knights forecast for a win looked decidedly gloomy after first one prop had to leave after 15 minutes with an open cut to the head, then seconds later the other first choice prop left with a head injury assessment (HIA) that he failed. Therefore his ‘temporary’ replacement became permanent. The partisan Knights crowd often shouted sir but more importantly the touch judge for an offside decision; this culminated with Cov’s replacement winger Thom Emery intercepting a pass in the last minute and running from about halfway unopposed to score. Knights fans can’t disagree that the better team on the day won the game and pray that the Knights return to form and strike back with a vengeance in Coventry next Sunday.
Cov danger men
Back row Fred Betteridge has a Facebook video entitled, “How do you stop Fred Betteridge on a rampage?” The answer was that you don’t! The Knights failed to stop him twice last week. The other back row players; Josh Bainbridge, Ryan Burrows, Senitiki Nayalo (represented the Army last Saturday) and Adam Peters are also difficult to tackle.
Ex-Knight Will Owen impressed but failed to score last time out.
Saturday’s game
All is not lost after losing the first leg 22-35, the Knights must go to Butts Park Arena in Coventry and win by more than 13 points to win the Quarter-finals on aggregate and proceed to the Semi-finals. The winner will play the winner of Jersey Reds and Hartpury who drew 19 all last week in Hartpury.
