Round 19, Doncaster Knights v Hartpury University Rugby Club, Castle Park, 19th February, KO 2.30
Hartpury University Rugby Club…
…won promotion from National League 1 at the end of the 2016–17 season. They finished tenth in their first season and ninth last season.
Ex-Barbarian and ex-Knight player/coach Derek Eves’ son Luke (ex-Bristol) plays centre for Hartpury.
Recent head to head performances
Over the last seven encounters, Doncaster Knights have won six to Hartpury’s one but last week Hartpury ‘saw’ the team below them (Bedford Blues) beat then then top team (Ealing Trailfinders), so they will possess increased self-confidence.
Last time out
Hartpury were extremely unlucky to score five tries (three converted) and still lose 31-40 to Jersey Reds. The Reds scored six tries and converted five of them. Hartpury tries were scored by No. 8 Mitch Eadie, scrum half Toby Venner, winger Sam Smith, and a brace by full back (or wing) Ben Foley. It was 19-19 at the break and Hartpury were leading 31-19 but later in the second half the Reds hit a purple patch of fifteen minutes when three unanswered tries were scored. To add insult to injury they were trailing by nine points when the game was called after 83 minutes by referee, Dan Jones, following a medical emergency in the crowd. Hartpury felt that the Reds were in the ascendency and weren’t under the impression that they could have overturned the result.
Hartpury danger men
Flanker Harry Short, scrum half Toby Venner and centre Robert Smith are all the Championship’s equal-seventh top try-scorers. Short had to come off injured against Jersey. Hooker William Crane has also dotted down half a dozen times.
Mitch Eadie, an ex-Premiership back row (Bristol Bears and Northampton Saints) is one to watch for; his breaking of tackles and quality of play demonstrates this.
Fly half/centre James Williams has scored the highest number of points in the Championship, significantly Williams has scored over 20% more than second-placed Bedford Blue William Maisey.
Team strengths and weaknessesT
Players such as Eadie or Short are easily capable of breaking tackles and opening gaps in the defence for smaller players to exploit. The Knights must also be wary of players such as Crane and Venner breaking off the set piece to score tries.
Saturday’s game
Despite their fifth position, Hartpury have scored the third highest number of points away from home in the Championship. As per their standing in the league, Hartpury have conceded the fifth fewest number of points in the Championship.
Can the Championship’s fourth best travellers breach the Knights defence of their biggest fortress in the Championship?
The rest of the Championship
Nottingham (10, I game in hand) v London Scottish (11)
Bedford Blues (6) v Cornish Pirates (4, 2 games in hand)
Jersey Reds (2) v Ealing Trailfinders (3, 2 games in hand)
Ampthill (7) v Richmond (8, 1 game in hand)
Coventry BYE
The Knights are first and Hartpury are fifth, a Knight win would see us stay top even without the bonus point. A Knight loss could see us drop to third depending on if Bedford beat the Pirates and the result of the Reds and Trailfinders. If the Pirates win plus the winner of the other game would go above us. If Jersey draw with Ealing, only Jersey would finish above us.
