Bedford Blues preview

Round 8, Castle Park,Saturday Sunday 2nd May. 1pm
Last week the Knights travelled to Richmond’s RAG and returned home 12-40 winners. It was the Blues’ turn to have a bye weekend instead of playing London Scottish. This obviously means that the Blues have had a weekend off and more time to prepare for their game with the Knights.
Going into the game, the Knights have played seven games, had six wins and one loss, the Blues have played six games with two wins and four losses. They have scored three bonus points, which equates to winning a bonus point in half of their games played.
The Knights have only scored two bonus points.
The Blues’ Fly Half Will Maisey is the sixth top point’s scorer in the Championship after playing a game less than four of the five above him. Put another way, Maisey could be the second highest points scorer. With a strike rate of over 88% Maisey has the best strike rate and so is highly likely to score even remotely kickable penalties. With a strike rate of over 87% another Blues Fly Half Tommy Mathews has scored seven of the eight kicks he has taken. The Championship’s leading points scorer is our own Sam Olver, his strike rate is just over 73%.
Richard Lane (Back Three) is the Championship’s equal-sixth top try scorer, after playing a game less than two of the players that have scored one more try. In other words Lane could be fourth.
In total the Blues have scored one try less than the Knights and conceded one try more than the Knights after playing six games to our seven.
Having seen their last few games because we were going to play their opposition the week after, they seem to be coming into form. I saw moves work against Richmond that didn’t work against the Pirates, Jersey Reds or Sarries. Hopefully that’s because their opposition was weaker and not because they’ve improved with practice.
Meanwhile elsewhere in the championship:
Games played the day before, Saturday 1st May:
Ealing Trailfinders (top, four points above) welcome Richmond (10th)
Saracens (3rd, one point below) travel to Nottingham to play the second-bottom green and whites (effectively bottom as the Scottish aren't playing.)
The Pirates are five points below us in fourth and they have lost two more games and so can’t overtake us if we lose without a bonus point and they win with a bonus point. The Pirates have been sent to Coventry (5th).
