Round seven, 3pm Richmond Athletic Ground (added)
Last Saturday Richmond travelled to Goldington Road to play Bedford Blues but returned home feeling blue (sorry!) after losing 38-10. Bedford were eighth and Richmond were tenth before the game. They had both won one game but Bedford had lost four to Richmond’s three because Richmond have only played four games. The Blues were two points above courtesy of two losing bonus points. After the game the Blues are now sixth and Richmond are ninth.
The Blues played well and defended excellently in the game and a Bedford Forward on the commentary team said that they practice moves often. It was as if some of the moves that didn’t quite work over the last couple of weeks were more seamless.
I noted down two Richmond players early on, mainly because Full Back Will Kay was mentioned as a player to watch but also No.8 Myles Scott impressed with his power driving forward. Scott is very wide and apparently know as ‘big sexy’. Scott then went on to power over to score Richmond’s only try. Later the Left Wing Jake Caddy was impressive with his speed and ‘snake hips’.
It is a nice touch that the Richmond team are ‘sponsored’ by the NHS and so had NHS on their shirts in large writing.
The Knights were also beaten 15-50 by the impressive Saracens with all of their International players, including many of of the England team. The Knights played valiantly but were outclassed. Sarries review of the game stated that they played the best they have ever played this season so credit to our lads.
On Saturday second-placed Knights must restart their unbeaten record against ninth-placed Richmond away before we welcome Bedford Blues to Castle Park. Richmond’s Fly Half Ted Landray has a strike rate of 80%. Only four kickers that have had more than one attempt at the posts have a higher strike rate. Our own Sam Olver is the leading scorer with a strike rate of 73%. Over 83% of the tries scored by Richmond have been by the Backs. Richmond have conceded two more tries than the Knights and these have been conceded equally to Forwards and Backs, predominantly down the wings.
Elsewhere the Cornish Pirates welcome Ampthill on Saturday at 13.30 but the match of the weekend is on Sunday when Saracens (third) welcome Ealing Trailfinders (top, unbeaten) to their StoneX Stadium. Trailfinders have beaten Sarries there before in the Trailfinders Cup but Sarries are now back to full strength. It will be an interesting result that could ultimately decide which team is promoted to the Premiership.
Coventry are only six points behind us in fifth. They travel to play eighth-placed Hartpury University.
