Round 2, Castle Park Sat 13th March
Competitive rugby returns to Castle Park after about a year, in what promises to be a scintillating early test for the new-look Knights, as we face Coventry this Friday, March 12th KO 18:00.
On Saturday 13th February Coventry welcomed Jersey Reds to Butts Park Arena and ended 34-33 winners. The Reds started by scoring 14 unanswered points.
"Coventry’s (Hooker) Nic Dolly was on the end of a strong line out drive, and fellow debutant (Flanker) Tom Ball, who had earlier showed his dangerous running, broke through to score by the uprights. Dolly then crashed over on the stroke of half-time. Rob Knox (Centre/Wing) spotted a small gap to start his try-scoring. “This was quickly followed by the try of the match. Playing with a penalty advantage, Cov put the ball through their hands. Phil Boulton threw a basketball pass out of a tackle to Ben Nutley (Back Row), he drew the defender perfectly before sending Tom Emery away down the left touchline. The England Sevens speedster feinted inside to hold the final defender, before turning on the afterburners and dive over in the corner.” (Coventryrugnyclub.co.uk) Knox concluded the scoring with an interception on half-way, to run and score.
Last week Coventry beat Bedford 10-9, again Cov’s Dolly scored what was the game’s only try. Dolly scored whilst Bedford were down to ten men. It reads like it was a fragmented affair with neither side taking hold of the game. That said, Cov Winger Rob Stevenson was denied a try by a last-minute tap tackle.
The Rugby Paper’s Championship Dream XV has Coventry’s Ryan Burrows at No 8, Burrows is Captain this season.
Both Cov and the Knights were obviously rusty after such a long time without a game. Ampthill lost to Bedford 33-36 at Dillingham Park, where we beat Amphill 17-19. Cov beat Bedford 10-9 at their home; Butts Park Arena, Coventry. Neither Ampthill, Bedford, Coventry or Doncaster have been outstandingly better than the other teams. This season’s fixtures may result (literally) in which team settles down after such an unprecedented, long, enforced break.
