This season in the B & I Cup the Knights travelled to Pandy Park near Newport, Wales to play Cross Keys and won 32 - 37. On Saturday they welcome the Cornish Pirates to Castle Park eager to win after losing to them here a fortnight ago in the league.
Next week the Knights play Bedford Blues in the Cup again at Castle Park. The reverse fixtures are from 28th Nov – 13th Dec inclusive.
Last weekend the Cornish Pirates beat Bedford Blues in the Cup 35 – 34. Only a points scored difference of six separate the four teams in Pool 4.
Unfortunately league form and stats serve as no comparison for B & I Cup games as teams may try different players, different moves, different set plays etc in preparation for league action. Some clubs use B & I Cup games as an opportunity to rest key players but others don’t!
Pirate history in B & I Cup:
2009/10 – Pirates beat Knights in Semi-final and went on to win the Cup.
2010/11 – Pirates didn’t make the Quarter-finals
2011/12 – Pirates lost 20 – 16 to Cross Keys in the Semi-final
2012/13 – Pirates lost by a point to Muster A in the Quarter-finals
2013/14 – Pirates lost to Pontypridd 14 – 15 in the Quarter-finals (played earlier this year)
The Pirates take the B & I Cup seriously and have only not made the play-off stages once. In the inaugural British & Irish Cup in the 2009/10 season the Pirates defeated the Knights in the semi-final and went on to win the Cup by beating Munster A.
After one game the Knights top Pool 4 in the B & I Cup on point’s difference of four over the Cornish Pirates.
