Jersey Reds in Championship Cup Preview
sponsored by Twenty Four IT Services (www.twentyfourit.co.uk)
ADDED - SAT 30th NOV 3pm - STADE SANTANDER INTERNATIONAL, JERSEY
We return to Cup action following a disappointing 9-24 defeat to a stronger, much dearer Ealing side that deserved their victory. Congratulations on the defensive effort Knights that kept the defeat acceptable.
Midway in the pool stage, after three games played, Pool 2 of the Championship Cup table reads:
Newcastle Falcons W3, 14 pts
Doncaster Knights W2, L1, 10 pts
Jersey Reds W1, L2, 7 pts
Hartpury W0, L3 0 pts
I don’t need to state (but I will) that the winner of our game will either remain or go to second in the table. Unless, of course, we beat Jersey with a try bonus point AND Newcastle lose to Hartpury without a losing bonus point!!
After three games both the Knights and the Reds qualify for the quarter-finals as runner up or one of two best third placed sides. Both sides will probably not qualify after Saturday, only the winner will but who knows… It could depend on how next-best Ampthill fare at Butts Park Arena against Coventry. Cov are just above Ampthill in Pool One.
The Knights beat the Reds 32–26 at Castle Park in the Cup on 5th October. Games between the sides have consistently been close results often with the loser at least receiving a losing bonus point. Jersey will want to assert the dominance in the league over us in the Cup and will only feel comfortable with a 4 or 5-0 win, i.e. no bonus point for us, never mind two like Jersey scored at Castle Park!
Jersey’s four tries against Doncaster were scored by Scrum Half Will Homer, Right Wing Leroy Van Dam (both in The Rugby Paper’s Championship Dream Team 2018/19), Lock/Back Row Kyle Hatherell and Hooker Antonio ‘TJ’Harris.
Don’t forget last season when Jersey Red Hooker Jack Macfarlane was last season’s top Cup try-scorer with eight tries from just five appearances.
The other fixture in Pool Two sees Hartpury travel to Newcastle to play the Falcons.
