Bedford Blues preview sponsored by Porsche Centre Sheffield (www.porschesheffield.co.uk)
Round 17, Castle Park Sat 23rd Sep, 2017 - 02:30pm
Last Friday both the Knights and Bedford felt blue after both teams lost, however Bedford Blues gained two bonus points when Carnegie beat them 44-45 at Goldington Road. (By finishing the game after scoring four tries and their score being within seven of Carnegie.)
Following Jersey Red’s demolishing first 25 minute display at St Peter’s when they scored four tries, Ollie Steadman said on our website, “We’ll try generate momentum from that second half into next week against Bedford, we showed some resilience in the second half, but we were outplayed overall. We scored 21 points in the second half we so we did show some fight.”
The Knights were 29-0 down at the break but came back insufficiently to lose 41-21. That gives a second half score of 12-21. According to Ollie, the Knights intend to try to emulate the second half performance rather than the first half demolition. They have gained the momentum to take that forward.
Over the 16 games played, fourth-placed Bedford Blues have scored 39 more points than the Knights and conceded 13 more. That is a net difference of the Blues scoring just over 1.6 more points per game than the Knights yet they are five places above us in the table. Only three of these points are bonus points; (Bedford have scored 11 to our 8 bonus points.) This extra just over a point scored has resulted in Bedford winning ten games and losing six to the Knights’ six wins and ten losses. I believe that Bedford have scored 57 tries to our 53.
The margins are that small in the Championship!
Before last weekend’s results Bedford’s Winger Ryan Hunter was the leading try-scorer in the Championship. Hunter had scored 12 tries over 15 games.
This year we have recorded three wins and three losses. We have scored over 20 points in each loss; 24 against Ealing Trailfinders, 25 against Nottingham and 21 against Jersey Reds. Unfortunately despite scoring more than 20 points, only one of these defeats scored a losing bonus point.
Other fixtures that could impact our eighth position this weekend are:
London Scottish (9th, equal) welcome Coventry (7th, +6)
Carnegie (10th, -2) welcome London Irish (top) to Emerald Headingley Stadium
