Hartpury College preview sponsored by Porsche Centre Sheffield (www.porschesheffield.co.uk)
Hartpury College v Doncaster Knights (www.drfc.co.uk)
Round 12, Sat 23rd Sep, 2017 - 02:30pm @ College Stadium Hartpury
After our fantastic away win at fortress Butts Park Arena when we beat Coventry 17-23 we have our second consecutive away game, this time against Hartpury College.
The win shook the monkey off our back, ending our run of five losses. Kendo has tasked the team with three consecutive wins in January and we’re a third of the way to achieving that goal. (Doncaster Free Press, 11th January)
Hartpury are bottom of the table with two wins from eleven games; they have scored the fewest and conceded the most points. They have scored an average of 15.3 points/game and conceded an average of 30.3 points/game. The Knights have averaged scoring 24.1 points/game and conceding 26.5 points/game. That is a net points scored average of 8.8 and conceded average of 3.8 or I believe 12.6 points scored/conceded in total in our favour. Let’s make those extra points count Knights.
On their journey the students have scored 23 tries and conceded about 46 tries,
Try-scoring has been a virtually 60:40 split home:away, more promising for us is that they have conceded 66% more tries at home. Their six-try to one, 5-38 demolition by London Irish on 28th December won’t have helped these stats.
The Knights have scored about 34 and conceded an estimated 41 tries. (Statbunker hasn’t been updated from game 11).
Two thirds of tries that have been scored by the students have been by Forwards, most notably (nearly 60%) by the Back Row. Only Ealing Trailfinder’s Back Row have scored more tries than Hartpury. Hartpury’s Back Row have scored eight tries to the Knights’ four.
Their Front Row are the Championship’s equal-fifth highest try scorers of that position.
Only 19% of tries conceded have been scored by Forwards, so Hartpury Forwards are a strength, both in attack and defence.
The students have conceded the most tries scored by Wingers and equal second most tries scored by Centres (tied with us).
John Bale reported on the unofficial forum that the following players are inured:
Dave Nelson (long term)
Hicks (long term)
Eames (long term)
Chal
Hills (limped off at Cov Groin I heard)
Jarv (long term)
McColl (Ankle should be back soon)
Cowell (Eyes, conjunctivitis we heard)
Wilson
Let’s all wish them a speedy recovery.
Dougie Flockhart said on our website, “Hartpury are a good team however they’re struggling just now, but away from home it’ll be tough for us as they’re a really hard team to beat down there, the boys are in good spirits after the weekends result so hopefully we can carry that onto the game against Hartpury.”
Other fixtures that could affect our ninth place in the Championship are:
Coventry (7th, 3 points above) welcome the Cornish Pirates (5th) to Butts Park Arena.
After we beat Cov at home, their Butts Park home fortress badge is tarnished; both in terms of confidence for Cov and in terms of reputation for away teams. We’ll see…
London Scottish (8th, 1 point above) travel across London to the Trailfinders Sports Club to play Ealing (2nd)
Trailfinders have only lost three games and won eight. This could be our chance to leapfrog them.
Richmond (10th, 5 points below) welcome Carnegie (11th, 5 points below) to their Athletic Ground (RAG)
I suppose the best result for us would be a draw then both teams get two points!
All of these games are on Saturday 19th January.
