Round 11. 12th Jan, 2019 - 03:00pm, Butts Park Arena
Our first game of 2019 will hopefully mark a return to form from our five-match losing streak when we play Coventry. Our next two games after Cov are against the current bottom and tenth placed teams respectively. We then travel to play Ealing on their 3G pitch. Hopefully the Knights have been practising on our own 3G pitch to lessen the home advantage.
As was pointed out on Sky TV before our televised match against Carnegie; we have suffered many near misses which often result in a losing bonus point but a few more points scored would give us four or even five league points.
To date, we lost:
31-24 to Cornish Pirates,
20-15 to Nottingham,
29-28 to Bedford Blues,
18-20 to Carnegie in the Cup,
31-29 to Coventry in the Cup,
14-19 to Nottingham in the Cup and
22-30 to Carnegie.
A total of 21points (5.25/game) scored over four league games would have given us a draw; 25 points (6.25/game) would have given us a win!
Third-placed Bedford Blues have only won seven games (four more than us), scored 21 more points (2/game) and conceded 30 points fewer (3/game). Slim margins that perhaps we made the most of last season when I believe we were about fourth after ten games.
Cov are six league points above us, so we can’t leapfrog them if or when we win this game. They have won four and lost five of their ten games played but they are then within reach for our next two games. Coventry welcome current sixth-placed Cornish Pirates after us and then travel to Bedford to play current third-placed Blues.
Over their ten games played Cov have scored 192 points (19.2 /game) and conceded 260 points (26 /game). The Knights have scored 242 points (24,2 /game) and conceded 275 points (27.5 /game). That leaves a net point’s scored/conceded difference of 35 in our favour.
Coventry may be seventh but they are second-equal in the home table after winning four from five home games. The Knights will remember their vociferous home support well after we lost 31-29 at Butts Park Arena on 8th December last year.
Cov have scored 24 tries to our 29 but two thirds of their tries were scored at home. Both teams have conceded 34 tries but about 60% of these were conceded by Coventry were away from Butts Park Arena.
New Knight Second Row Lasha Lomidze who signed for the Knights about three weeks ago and is hoping for more game time with the Knights during the remainder of the season.
The Georgian International has previously played for London Irish as well clubs in France, Russia and Georgia.
All teams have had a weekend off to recover fully from the excesses of New Year’s Eve, other fixtures whose result could affect our current ninth place are:
London Scottish (8th) welcome Hartpury College (12th) to their Athletic Ground on Friday
Richmond (10th) travel to Oxford to play London Irish (1st) on Sunday
Carnegie (11th) welcome the Cornish Pirates (6th) on Sunday
If we beat Coventry @ Castle Park by one point in the Championship Cup; they beat us by two points in the return fixture @ Butts Park Arena. Both teams are familiar with each other’s style of play plus Cov have four good South Sea Island, ex-Knight players that have joined them in the past couple of seasons.
COYK let’s end this five-match losing streak
