Round 15 , Castle Park (www.drfc.co.uk) Sat 23rd Sep, 2017 - 02:30pm
Last week the Knights played in front of a vocal crowd at Butts Park Arena against a team with a fully Tongan Back Row, two of which were ex-Knights.
The Knights have won two and Nottingham have won one of their five games played. Nottingham have scored four more tries and 18 more points in the process but they have conceded nine more tries and 35 more points. That is a net advantage of five tries and 17 points to the Knights. You can’t attempt to tally points and tries together ‘cos five tries is 25 points already! The numbers mix points scored against points conceded and the take one side’s figure from the other. The main thing is that the Knights have the upper hand.
Nottingham Hooker Jake Farnworth is the equal-fourth top try-scorer in the Championship Cup, level with our own Ben Hunter and Will Owen. All have scored three tries in five games.
As martinc said on the Forum, “…we will need 4 points from Nottingham to proceed to next round of the cup for an away day draw to Jersey / Irish.”
The Pool 1 table; all teams have played five games:
1 Leeds Carnegie won 4; 18 points
2 Coventry won 3; 17 points
3 Doncaster Knights won 2; 11 points
4 Nottingham won 1; 8 points
As can be seen, Nottinghan are just three points below us plus one win.
Carnegie and Coventry are through to the Quarter Finals, we need to be one of the two best third-place finishers.
The full Cup table:
Rank Pool leaders/best runner-up
1 London Irish 24
2 Jersey Reds 21
3 Ealing Trailfinders 21
4 Leeds Carnegie 18 (copied)
Rank Pool runners-up/top two 3rd place
5 Coventry 17
6 Cornish Pirates 14
7 Bedford Blues 11
8 Doncaster Knights 11
9 London Scottish 5
Doncaster Free Press say in their below article that we can’t finish the game empty-handed. We need to at least draw with Nottingham. Possibly just getting one losing bonus point would suffice because Nottingham are 17 points scored behind us and we’d be within seven if we scored a losing bonus point. It’s all ifs, buts and maybe’s; we should go out to win.
The situation is looking promising as I believe I’m correct in saying that overall the Scottish exiles can’t catch us because of the two bonus points we scored in Coventry. They could catch us if we had only scored one and overtake us if we hadn’t scored a point. Bedford Blues and we have both won two games; the Scottish have only won one game.
