Our second Championship Cup game against local rivals Carnegie. Last week in Hull Carnegie had a 26-3 lead at the break after the Knights gave away three penalties in 17 minute. A turnover allowed Temm to find a gap and sprint 30m to score. A further penalty followed (12 points, memories on Nottingham spring to mind) then a second try following an interception 26-3 was a healthy lead but Carnegie’s points weren’t earned by good rugby, they were ceased upon by Knights’ errors so a second-half comeback wasn’t out of the question. Carnegie then scored another try, this time through their own efforts; a driving maul and then pass out wide. We then scored three tries, two unconverted .
FT 33- 20, three tries each were scored and so it was an even game without factoring in points scored off the boot.
The Yorkshire Evening Post ran the story, “Leeds Carnegie 33 Doncaster 20: Carnegie finally hit their straps in derby cup win.” In the article they included that Umaga is on loan from Wasps, so they can’t rely on the accuracy of his boot forever.
Doncaster Free Press wrote, “Doncaster Knights: Clive Griffiths expecting better in return clash with Leeds Carnegie.” In the article Griff states that the Knights have the momentum going into the game because we were superior in the second half. We just didn’t quite do enough.
Ben Hunter said of the game, “The Knights suffered their first defeat in the Championship cup at the weekend, but Ben Hunter is hopeful the momentum is with Doncaster after an impressive second half to take into next week’s match with Leeds Carnegie again.
“Any game against Leeds is a big game it doesn’t matter where we play, so next week we get to play them again so bring it on and hopefully we are on the front foot now with the way with finished that second half scoring three tries.”
“We want to get the victory at home in front of the home supporters and get back to winning ways…”
That defeat to Carnegie leaves the Group 1 North table of the Championship Cup with an unexpected leader. Coventry top the group with 11 points, Carnegie are second with 10 points, we’re third with 8 points and Nottingham are bottom with just two points. Nottingham have yet to win but the other three teams have all played three, won two, lost one.
Jersey Reds lead the Championship Cup group stage by one point over London Irish. Both teams are the only ones to have not lost yet.
