Carnegie in Championship Cup

Sat 24th November 12:00 Hull Ionians RFC - Club Ground, Brantingham Park
A passage from the game review when Carnegie beat Nottingham 38-19 by the Yorkshire Post reads, “…Carnegie got off to the best possible start in the opening five minutes through Kieran Frost (Lock).
Jacob Umaga (Utility Back) scored on his debut for Leeds Carnegie after a slick passing move. Two tries in as many minutes just before half-time from Antonio Kiri Kiri (Flanker, former New Zealand Sevens international) and Dan Temm (Back Row) gave Carnegie a solid 24-7 lead at the break.
Carnegie once again started the half quickly and they blitzed the visitors with two more tries early on through debutant Tom Hill and Kiri Kiri once more...”
Last time out wasn’t so flattering to Carnegie. Coventry beat them 51-32. That result leaves Carnegie third in the Pool table after just a couple of games. Early days but an almost perfect start by the Knights; played two. Won two. It would be better if we had won a try-bonus point with each win but a win is a win, well done Knights.
Of the 51-32 loss to Coventry, the Yorkshire Post mentioned, “…A Coventry try after 53 minutes was cancelled out five minutes later when Elder went over for his second of the afternoon. Almost an exact replica of his first as Forsyth broke through the line and off-loaded brilliantly. The pinpoint precision of Umaga’s kicking was putting Carnegie into great positions deep into Coventry territory which sooner or later had to lead to points.
On 70 minutes an outrageous off-load from Antonio Kiri Kiri allowed the ball to be spread wide to captain Matt Smth who powered over in the corner. A further penalty from Umaga levelled the scores at 32-32 with just seven minutes remaining, setting the game up for a grandstand finish.Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for the visitors as three quick-fire tries at the end of the match ended any Carnegie hopes of making it two wins out of two in the cup. However, they do come away with a try bonus point and a lot of positives to take away from the performance…”
So the game was level with seven minutes to go but the score doesn’t indicate that.
The Pool 1 Table after two games:
Doncaster Knights 8
Coventry 6
Carnegie 6
Nottingham 1
Both Coventry and Carnegie have won one, lost one but Cov are above on a point’s scored difference of 18.
Jersey Red and London Irish lead Pools 2 and 3 respectively, both with ten point; two bonus –point wins. That leaves the Knights in third place in the Championship Cup standings.
Cov play Nottingham at Butts Park Arena at the same time.
