Nottingham lost their opening Championship Cup game to Carnegie at Huddersfield YMCA RUFC; Carnegie 38-19 Nottingham

“Six tries from the hosts overwhelmed the Green and Whites, whose defence has been among the best in the league so far this season. Tries from Will Millett and Harry Graham were not enough to topple Yorkshire, who sit in 12th place in the Greene King IPA Championship.” (Nottingham rugby website)

Only London Irish and Jersey Reds have conceded fewer tries in the Championship this season.

Carnegie top the Championship Cup Group 1 (North) table by a points difference of one; the try bonus point scored following the six tries they scored against Nottingham. The Knights are second, Coventry are third and Nottingham are fourth. Coventry scored a losing bonus point against us and Nottingham have yet to score a point.

It’s too early to be meaningful but the Knights are sixth in the Cup rankings after one game. The rankings are:

1. London Irish
2. Carnegie
3. Jersey Reds
4. London Scottish
5. Cornish Pirates
6. Doncaster Knights
7. Ealing Trailfinders
8. Coventry

Only Bedford Blues, Hartpury College, Nottingham and Richmond don’t appear yet but it’s too early to be worried about not reaching the knockout stages.

Hopefully we will not give twelve points away again at Lady Bay because that is what lost us the game earlier this season. Our discipline has improved significantly since then though.

The other pool game is: Coventry v Carnegie @ Butts Park Arena on Saturday 17th November.

A question to any English teacher out there; my computer constantly tells me that sentences such as, "...and Nottingham have yet to score a point," is grammatically incorrect. My logic is that it would be if I was mentioning Nottingham as a place (singular - has) but I'm mentioning Nottingham rugby team (plural - have). Am I correct?

The answer to your question, Jamie, is that there is no definitive answer to your question. Modern British English widely recognises both plural and singular verbs when using a collective noun as a subject. Scholars still argue one or the other to be correct but the perceived wisdom is that both are acceptable. American English, on the other hand, still chooses to follow the more archaic ruling that only singular verbs should be used with a collective noun. I believe even here, sports teams create a similar debate so it may be that the default settings on your word processing are American. I suppose that is of no help whatsoever.

Thanks guys, just to throw this into the mix, the word team is singular but it's made up of many players and I'm taking about their achievements collectively not just the team as a singular entity. Don't know if that makes a difference and I'm beginning to realise that it don't much matter (speaking of grammar!)

No need for the verbage from SS
The correct name of the club is Nottingham Rugby Football Club Limited registered at companies house under Co No 05708418 .
It is a single legal entity and the use of the singular in reference to it is therefore correct
