Jersey Reds preview (sponsorship pending)
Round 6, Castle Park Sat 23rd Sep, 2017 - 02:30pm
As our website summed up the trip to Lady Bay last Friday, “The Knights were left with a losing bonus point after a frustrating evening in Nottingham, resuting in a 20-15 defeat.
It was tale of ill discipline as the Knights conceded five penalties, yet out scored the opposition by two tries to one.” (Direct quote)
The positives to take from the game is that we coulda, shoulda won; we outscored the Green & Blacks two tries to one. All we need to do is keep our discipline because we gave away fifteen points.
Jersey are tenth just one point below the Knights, so the winner takes it all - well the points and the higher league position. Jersey have a game in hand but that’s against London Irish. Could their substantial home advantage defeat the Irish?
Jersey have won one and lost three of their four games played but they have scored five bonus points over the four games (two try, three losing). Unusually they gained two bonus points in their 27-24 loss to London Scottish.
Jersey Reds convincingly beat Carnegie in their last fixture 36-19, which was in Jersey. The Reds still have their game in hand over all teams except London Irish, therefore total points scored or conceded can’t be compared but over their four games played the Reds have scored an average of 24.25 points and conceded an average of 23.
The Knights have won two and lost three games, scoring an average of 23.4 points and conceding an average of 24.6 points over their five games. Slight advantage Reds on points scored:conceded.
The Reds lost their first three games, which were all away after their London Irish clash was postponed. Their first home game this season, last week showed the substantial home advantage that Jersey holds, hopefully the trip to Castle Park on 6th October will meet with another away loss.
Fly Half Brett Heron is the Reds top points-scorer with Full Back/Wing Augey Slowick their top try-scorer. Hooker Nicholas Selway has scored one try fewer.
Jersey have scored 14 tries in their first four games, the same as the Knights have in five. Jersey try-scoring has been equal between Backs and Forwards, which is odd given their individual try-scorers above, the Jersey Front Row have scored five tries in four games. This a strength that only the Irish have equalled plus all other teams have played an extra game than these two teams.
The Reds have conceded an average of three tries per game, three of these have been to the Front Row and three have been to Wingers. Front Row try scoring and conceding has been prevalent against Jersey.
Other fixtures that could affect the Knights’ league position are:
In summary:
Nottingham v Pirates
Blues v Carnegie
Scottish exiles v Irish exiles
Richmond v Coventry
Hartpury v Trailfinders
Nottingham (4th, 5 points above) travel to the Mennaye to play the Cornish Pirates (1st).
Bedford Blues (5th, 2 points above) travel to Yorkshire to play Carnegie (bottom; 12th). Carnegie could catch us but they’d have to score at least 43 points more than the Blues to go above us.
London’s Scottish exiles (6th, 1 point above) welcome the Irish exiles (3rd with a game in hand) to London.
Richmond (9th, 1 point below) play Coventry (7th, 1 point above).
Hartpury College (11th, 2 points below) await Ealing Trailfinders (2nd).
A General Point (KORT?) to note is that the Knights are top of the half time lose – full time win table, we have lost the first half of four games and then gone to win half of them. We need to start stronger and not play catch-up.
OK London Irish actually tops the table with their win one after losing one at half time! One from one isn’t a relevant stat in my opinion.
Jersey Reds became the first team in the Championship to not offer a printed program. They are only available online. The Reds stated that this would be a significant cost saving. Will others follow their example?
