Round 2, Castle Park Sat 23rd Sep, 2017 - 02:30pm
We kick off the 2018/19 season of home fixtures eager for Castle Park to be feared as a fortress for the Knights with a fixture against last season’s newcomers Hartpury College. The students are now aware of the standard on the Championship and will look to play on their fitness, running and passing strengths. Last season Hartpury finished their first season in the Championship a respectable tenth, three places below the Knights, only conceding five more points in the process.
Similar to the Pirates, Hartpury collected the second highest number of losing bonus points across the Championship last year and so a few points more scored that season would convert a losing bonus point to a win. If those seven single losing bonus points scored three more points with a win, Hartpury would have finished sixth and above the Knights – slim margins.
“…Griff is looking forward to the opening home fixture. “Hartpury like to play rugby just like us and if it is anything like last season, it’ll be an entertaining game.”” (DRFC website)
When the Knights travelled to play Hartpury last October, the Students were the victors by two points. The Knights then beat the league newcomers 48-38 at Castle Park in February. It was an exciting, high-scoring game that saw 14 tries scored (eight to the Knights, six to the students).
Player movements for the students cannot be compared to the rest of the Championship as players will leave after completing their course at the College. Hartpury also mix youth with experience, Hartpury RFC has strong links with Aviva Premiership side Gloucester Rugby, whose training base is located adjacent to the first-team pitch at Hartpury. This close relationship between the two has seen a number of dual-registered players, all of who are current or recently departed Hartpury students, pulling on the red and black Hartpury jersey as well as the Cherry and Whites strip.

With that said according to Wikipedia there are:
No players in,
Eleven players Out:
James Williams to Birmingham Moseley, Mike Daniels to Nottingham, Ed Coulson to Bedford Blues, Maliq Holden to Cornish Pirates, George Boulton to Cinderford, Jacob Perry to London Scottish, Alex Ducker to Camborne, Ben So'oalo Chan released, Joe Dancer released, Darryl Dyer released, BJ Edwards released
According to the Rolling-maul Hartpury have signed five players from Gloucester on a dual registration deal, including former England U20 men Tom Seabrook, Alex Seville and Ciaran Knight
“With the 2018-19 Greene King IPA Championship season just a little over 48 hours away, we caught up with Head Coach, Mark Cornwell, for his thoughts on pre-season and the opener against Leeds Carnegie, this Friday (Gillman’s Ground, 7.45pm).
Hartpury have had two pre-season fixtures, away at both Worcester Warriors (L 52-24) and National 1 side, Cinderford (W 7-34), as well as a conditioned session with the Bristol Bears and a couple of training run-outs with Gloucester Rugby.
“It’s been a long pre-season – we came in on June 11th – which seems like an age ago now,” said Cornwell. “The lads have worked incredibly hard – and I know that all coaches are going to say that – but this season was unusual because a lot of it took place in a heatwave!
The boys are now absolutely ready to get out there on Friday and to put into practice everything we’ve been working on for the past several weeks.
Worcester was very tough for us, as we knew that it would be, but we took a lot of things to work on out of that game which have been extremely valuable for us in the last couple of weeks. The boys have reacted incredibly well to the experience.
It’s difficult to get continuity in these games because you want to look at a wide group of players and there are always people running on and off. However, from our point of view there were a lot of positives out of the Cinderford game.
I was disappointed with a couple of things in the first period (of three) but, as we got things going, we scored a couple of tries out wide and also managed to get the driving lineout working well. It’s always a ‘work in progress’ at any club, but we’re happy with where we are at the moment.
We’ve picked up a couple of bumps in pre-season, both in the games and in training, which is not ideal, but we play a physical game and so we’ve just got to get on with it.”
In terms of squad health, influential centre Steve Leonard is targeting the Week 2 fixture, away to Doncaster Knights, as a possible return date from a hamstring niggle.”

Their season-opener was at home on Friday 31st Aug against Carnegie. Nine of those named in the Hartpury team are either currently studying there, or recently graduated. Hartpury won 16-5. That puts the students third in the Championship, probably the highest they have ever been – the 15th best team in England.
The Knights lost 31-24 to the Pirates, that loss leaves the Knights tenth; above Trailfinders and Carnegie – it could be worse! Only top-placed Pirates won a winning (try) bonus point.
One of Hartpury’s Centres is Luke Eves (ex-Bristol, Luke is the son of ex-Knight Player/Coach Derek Eves.
