Sale Sharks pre-season preview sponsored by Steadfast Industrial Conveyor Belts (www.steadfast.uk.com)
“Sale Sharks is an English professional rugby union club from the Greater Manchester that plays in the English Premiership. Their northern rivals are the Newcastle Falcons.
The club is an offshoot of amateur club Sale FC, still based at Heywood Road in Sale, while the Sharks share the A.J. Bell Stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell, Eccles with Salford Red Devils rugby league club this game will be played at Heywood Road.
Their junior team, the Jets, has developed players including Steve Hanley, Mark Cueto, Dean Schofield, Chris Jones, Andy Titterrell and Charlie Hodgson. (Wikipedia)
The Sale rugby setup is similar to the one at Doncaster with our professional team being the Knights and theirs the Sharks. Our Sale FC equivalent is Doncaster phoenix and their Jets equivalent (U17/U18, who play in Aviva 'A' League) are the renamed Doncaster Knights Mini Juniors (Colts). Sale also have an U16’s; they are all part of Sale Sharks Academy.
The major differences being Sharks - Premiership (Tier 1) v Knights - Championship (Tier 2), Sale FC - National One (Tier 3) v Phoenix - Midlands Premier (Tier 5) plus Sale Sharks play at the AJ Bell Stadium and the others play at Heywood Road just over seven miles away but Doncaster’s teams all play at Castle Park.
“Clive Griffiths' squad will make the trip to Heywood Road, home of 2006 Premiership champions Sale Sharks in their first pre-season match. The Sharks finished eighth last season in the top division, but have a number of talented players the Knights will be wary of.
Sharks' Scotland International Bryon McGuigan scored 12 league tries last season. While 28 year-old Alan MacGinty managed 144 points and is a regular for the USA national team, having been capped 18 times.
Another threat the Knights will be aware of is scrum-half Faf De klerk, who put in a man-of-the-match display for South Africa against England last weekend (9th June), with the Springboks victorious in the international test match.
Clive believes it will be the ideal first test for his new squad. "There's no better way to start off then a stern test, they have two games that weekend so won't be a full strength Sale Sharks side, but will still be representive of an outstanding Premiership side."
While strength and conditioning coach and first team player Doughie Flockhart is looking forward to the clash with the Premiership outfit. "Sale Sharks are getting better and it'll be an even tougher game away, it'll be a good to put ourselves out there against a strong side and hopefully come out on top."” (DRFC website)
Chris Ashton is the recently announced new signing for Sale and what a great signing he is. Ashton has said that he regrets cutting short his availability to play for England by going to play for French side Toulon. At the time of his departure Stuart Barnes commented that the move was a no-brainer – swapping Newcastle for Toulon, by the Mediterranean and for significantly more money!
This game marks the first of a trio of pre-season games; two Premiership opposition teams bookend the warm up games with a newly promoted National One side sandwiched in the middle. Sale FC who are obviously brimming with confidence after only losing 3 of their 30 games played and finishing five points above second-placed Sedgley Park (SP) in National Two North. Sales FC had a points difference of 654, that was 217 better than the next best (SP). It was not a close-run league victory.
The Sharks have split their team, some have gone to France to play at Castres Olympique in the XXIV Challenge Vaquerin tournament, more information: www.salesharks.com/news/5196.ph [HASH].W2gEakm0WUk
On 18th August Sale Sharks travel over the border to play Pro12 team Edinburgh at Meggetland Sports Complex.
“England head coach Eddie Jones has named a 44-man pre-season training squad to convene at the Lensbury Hotel from Saturday 4 August until Monday 6 August…
…"This is a pre-season camp so a lot of our players, particularly the ones who went on the South African tour, have just started training with their clubs so it's just a chance to get a group of players together to have a chat about the season ahead and look at the important areas in developing the team," said Jones….
