Last time we played each other: Doncaster Knights 17-41 Leinster ‘A’ (14th October, Castle Park)
It was a game that demonstrated a well-drilled side that showed little sign of weakness. It was not a game of woulda, coulda, shoulda, the Knights had to put their hands up and admit that Leinster A were the better team on the day. It’s now time to have studied their plays, try to identify weaknesses to exploit and be the better team on the day. Leinster A scored five tries but the Knights scored three, so the Irish team’s defence can be breached.
The Knights must start strongly as they did last time the teams played but this time make pressure and possession lead to points. Again this time around the Knights should not give away points in terms of kickable penalties, turnovers and line-out overthrows. The latter two plus a penalty lead to Munster A scoring 17 points within five minutes just after the half-hour mark. Their place kicker, Conor Dean scored five conversions plus two penalties; Dean almost scored as many points himself as all of the Knights did (16). A 0-20 deficit is difficult to come back from.
In Pool 1, we are level with Munster A as best runner-up.
Munster A play Ospreys Select in this round. Unfortunately the Ospreys Select haven’t won a B & I Cup game yet this season and they have only recorded two league points, the same as Cardiff Blues Select. I don’t know how many runner-up teams go through to the knockout stages, I have a feeling it’s two, anyone?
Carnegie & the Pirates have both scored 14 league points, are currently second and would finish second in their groups if they won the next round (Pirates would most likely, not 100%). This would place them above us if we don’t score any league points. Simply put, I believe a win would guarantee we go through to the next round; a loss means that we’re reliant on other results.
