Cardiff Blues Select in B & I Cup preview
Saturday 16th December Sardis Road (home of Pontypridd RFC)
Immediately following on from last week’s encounter at Castle Park, the Blues and the Knights lock horns again in this British & Irish Cup fixture. This time the Knights are away at the home of Pontypridd Rugby Club, Sardis Road.
Last week both sides had the opportunity to assess how each team plays and they will have worked on strengthening their defence against the most likely attacks and increasing their attacking capability against any identified potential weaknesses. In a similar but quirky twist each side will look to play in a different way for this second game so that their opposition isn’t familiar with the way that they play.
I very much doubt that the Knights will have a ten try to two, 70-12 victory. That win is a B & I Cup season record home win. Simon Humberstone’s nine conversions is also a season record for conversions scored. Simon additionally holds the season record for the most points scored in a match with 18.
I can’t find any information on how many Cardiff Blues are able to play in Cardiff Blues Select XV, if any. If the teams are interchangeable the Knights could face a very different and vastly improved team. As the old saying goers ‘you can only play the team in front of you’, so there’s no point worrying.
Pool 2
Leinster A 15
Knights 10
Bristol 6
Cardiff 0
At the moment the Knights are the highest-scoring runners-up but we’re only half way through the Cup matches, four teams have only played two matches. (Two each from Pools 1 and 5.)
On a side note about attendances; Highest — 7,428
Bristol at home to Doncaster Knights on 22 October 2017, so we helped the well-supported Bristol to attract that many supporters.
Lowest — 100
Scarlets Premiership Select at home to Hartpury College on 21 October 2017, how on earth could a club survive on that few supporters. It becomes apparent the lack of interest in the Cup by many.
Bristol fly over to Ireland to play Leinster A at Donnybrook on Friday 15th December.
